Hi All,

I'm having a curious problem with the trans. I got a code 62 a while back and changed the converter to a new triple disc but the code came back immediately. The conditions that make the code pop up are going uphill with overdrive off, or on. If the OD is off while going uphill it still causes a code 62. I don't quite understand that since the converter isn't commanded to come on. On flat ground, or slight inclines, the converter locks and stays locked and won't throw a code. Hitting the brakes causes it to unlock as it should. It only happens on long steep hills. Otherwise it shifts perfectly fine. The speedo and rpm read correctly with no bouncing.

What I did prior to changing the converter are:
New Motorcraft VSS
New Motorcraft RPM sensor due to bare wires at the sensor
Cleaned and greased the trans connector and solenoid pack (seemed perfectly fine with no corrosion before cleaning)
New MLPS'sss I've had to change a few of these
Checked fluid levels frequently
Checked FIPL voltages and they're in range
Installed new stator seal while converter was out
Fluid is still red and not burnt
Checked all wiring and it seems fine

I'm going to change out the solenoid pack and connector this weekend. I have no idea if it's original but that's all I can see left to try, other than there being an internal hard parts problem.

I don't feel bad about changing the converter because it was a little scorched. I'm not sure if this is typical though.

Any suggestions?

Are you seeing that the converter clutch isnt being commanded in those conditions? There are slight programing differences year to year, and some differences truck to truck, but I think it should be locking the converter under those conditions, I have not had one that didnt. Unless you are going really slow....

Even with OD off the OD light will start flashing if I'm going over 30mph while going up a steep hill and give a 62. On flat ground it's perfectly fine. Seems strange that it happens while OD is off while going uphill only. Could the solenoid not be opening or closing completely?

solenoid wiring
Thanks for the diagrams. I switched the relays between 1 and 3, still the same I'm afraid, and no burnt or discolored pins. My solenoid pack has the same number of wires as your diagram but no missing pins, it's also thinner walled. It's been fine for the 4 years I've had it, until recently, so the extra pins must not be needed.

The scorch ring is the clutch frying. "Ring of death" Usually found on high mileage units.
Now with the tranny in third the converter can still lock if the parameters are right.
Recheck your TPS. You might have to tweak it a little.

I checked it again, it's 1.2 at idle and 3.9 at WOT, 3.9 is a bit low so maybe I'll try to bump it up. I looked smooth throughout the range, but I might change it just to be sure. I did change it when I first got the truck but it's not a Motorcraft part and I haven't had the best luck with aftermarket parts. I just ordered a new one by Motorcraft and hopefully that fixes it.

might be worth running a test light to see when tcm commands lockup. Mine would lockup in 2nd.

Seems like the wire is purple with yellow tracer.
