Well I put the ZD1A glow plugs in less than 500 miles ago. 5 out of 8 are bad already. I have a manual control for the glow plugs which i only do 10 seconds max with. Anyone else have this kind of failure rate? The old Autolites that i took off were all good when I removed them to replace because of others telling of nightmares with them. Non were blown at the tips just did not work. I have ordered new Delphi glow plugs to replace the ZF1A's. Has anyone had this kind of failures on the Motorcraft ZF1A's?

Thanks

Where did you buy them? There are counterfeits out there.

From what i've read if they're genuine Motorcraft glow plugs the glow plug controller should be used. If it's a manual push button there's another set that works better for longer. I forget which set. Did each glow plug come individually wrapped? Did the body say BERU?

Dont use the delphi plugs. Just got done fighting a set of those out of a 6.9.

The bosch 80034 is the plug you want with manual control

That plug has a spade connector. Is there an equivalent with the bullet connector?

I was having similar problems for the last few years with Beru Glow Plugs. Bought all of them from Rockauto.com so I believe they were authentic motorcraft (Beru). Normally used 10 seconds and then cut it down to 7 seconds. Still the plugs would start dying after a few months of use. Nothing visually wrong with them when removed, they just stopped working.

Now I'm a heretic and run autolite (!!!) dual coil plugs. Still only need 10 seconds for a clean start but not one has failed since putting them in about 6 months ago. I tested each of them for 1 min before putting them in and none failed to self-regulate. I was one of the biggest skeptics when it comes to dual coil glow plugs but the failure rate I was experiencing with Beru plugs forced me to reconsider. I'm not recommending it, but it's what I was willing to try.

Yup Im noticing Buru's failing to, Rockauto sourced ones. I'd like to look a little further into the Rockauto sourced Buru's for authenticity

And maybe the quality is just slipping badly ...

Ron,

Not suggesting it is your problem but some found if your timing is way off it eats glow plugs very fast like yours. (I do not recall if too advanced or too retarded is the cause.) Something you may want to check.

Also double check your glowplug switch is giggle and bump proof. Maybe it is going on while driving or a kid, grandkid, or dog has accidentally found the switch to play with, step on, or lay against. Would not be the first time.

Lets us know down the road if the Bosch glow plugs are better and ballon free.

When I was looking at glow plugs a couple years ago, I read some where a guy made a comment about accidentally shutting his truck down on WVO and it had set for a while and when he crunk it up that it smelled "like a McDonald's burned down" but whatever glow plugs he had worked great. I've been trying to remember what he had but my poor brain just can't pull it up. Seems like it started with a "W", but I don't know.

I've had several kinds of counterfeits. I've used the Bosch and Autolite versions too, which in my experience don't last and are sometimes a problem to extract - others use them without issue.

In the end make a best guess as to the right parts. For me, in one case the hole punched in the bag was the give away, in another - it was the lack of Beru markings on the barrel. In yet a third case, mushroomed and broke off the tip which went down and rested on the piston, and required a shop to use the exhaust valve compression + vacuum method to extract.

In this case - "start with a good close visual inspection" - applies to the parts. FWIW, Amazon took them back, but appeared to completely ignore my assertion they were fakes or mislabeled - even tho the bag was clearly labeled ZD1A - but inside the bag were ZD9 bullet end plugs. Further inspection found that some sourced from RockAuto - lacked Beru markings or part numbers were painted not stamped. While I don't bench test them - I do test resistance.

After my supply of ZD1A's is gone... I will defensively make the upgrade to the ZD9 harness and controller. My two month experience trying to fish the tip off the top of the piston, taught me a lot about how easy it would be to grenade the engine. Yes, there are stories here about running the engine to pass the tip through, I don't think "insanely lucky" accurately describes the odds of that turning out well.

Some of the discussion on my experience, with some relevant links:
