It's been a LOOOONG time since I've even looked at one of these. I found an exploded view/parts list online. There is something called a seal ring. That looks like a large circlip. It appears that you have to remove that from the turbo exhaust housing and then the down pipe will slide out toward the passengers' side. That may or may be accurate since I'm going off of a parts diagram.

Ah so the ring holds it in? How do you get to it though?

EDIT: It looks like it'll be easier to just leave that alone and undo the turbo itself to get it out of the way. It has several o-rings (air inlet, air outlet, oil drain) but those are probably easier to get than a sealing ring.

I sent an email to Russ/typ4 through his website so hopefully he'll be in contact tomorrow.

Even though I've probably seen more, I can only remember seeing 2 or 3 085s. I don't remember removing the down pipe. I'm sure that I just pulled the turbo off with it installed. I was trying to remove the engine though, not the transmission.

Tonight when I get off work I'm going to just try uninstalling the bolts that hold the pedisral to the head, see if I can get enough of a tilt on the turbo to sneak the trans out. Honestly it only needs a few inches for the tq converter to clear the flex plate then it'll drop right out.
I do, however have to get the exhaust pipe from the down pipe to the first hanger out, it's in the way as well. Luckily all the exhaust bolts are playing nicely, knock on wood!

Can anyone verify what u-joints these use? I'm 99% sure it's 1330 series. Needing to know so I can be sure to get the correct 1350 adapter u-joint for the gear vendors yoke.

The C6 just got dropped off at the trans shop to be torn down, where it'll be for 4 days or so, so might get it back on Tuesday or so. The guy there said he'd call me today or tomorrow once it's torn down and inspected so they can give a better estimate, ie if any deep internal hard parts are ruined or not. The higher end price was $2400 so maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be under $2k.

I can hear it as I look at the tranny picture......."sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name!"..

I just ordered a B&M 80212 trans temp gauge. It was more expensive than Auto Meter gauges, but it comes compression fittings so I can easily just cut the steel line in a good place near the trans and put it on, no hunting for fittings at auto parts stores to make a lower priced one fit. I do like the color bars, makes it a bit easier to eyeball.

Yeah the cost is gonna hurt, it looks like. I hadn't heard from the shop, so I called a bit before they closed today, and they said the pump and both drums were damaged, and they're waiting to hear from their suppliers on costs.

All of this will still cost less than buying a E4OD, a stand alone controller, and then having the E4OD gone though.

Agreed. And it's easier to move a gear vendors overdrive to another vehicle with a C6, should I ever want to. I'll just be paying a hundred or two at most in interest to pay things off, plus using most of my savings. But come this fall/winter, when back in AZ, living costs are very low so I can catch up a good bit. I had $800 extra in savings from last season because I was stashing it for fuel costs this year. The long driving tour is effectively cancelled for this year, due to the timing of the C6 failing hard, but that's fine.

I may go to a pretty affordable RV park in Utah and stay there for 2-3 months before heading into AZ around early October. That's really not that far off.
