I used to listen to a preacher that's in southern California named Leo Geovineti. Before he came to the Lord he was a jazz piano player in a Vegas casino. He used to say that, " the only person that really wins in a casino is the guy who owns the casino." The only gambling I do is wake up in the morning and deal with the general public.

Yeah it's a rigged thing basically but considering they are letting me stay here for a week over the normal time allowed, I don't mind throwing them a few bucks for "rent" of the parking lot, but it'll probably be in the form of buying food so at least I get something out of it for sure.

I'm second guessing that shop I'm currently lined up with. Their lot is so small and packed with cars based on satellite & street views, I won't be able to store my trailer there. And getting in/out from the busy city street might be hard with the trailer, especially with a dying reverse gear.

I have another place in mind that has an old RV and buses in their street view photo and tall garage bays, but they're totally closed on weekends (it's bloody Saturday) so I have to wait until Monday to call them and see what their estimate is. Might just suck it up and pay more if they aren't too terribly more expensive.

My biggest problem is where to go while waiting. I might have to put it off for another couple weeks for the "better" shop. I could potentially go to a cheap campground ~20 miles way on the north side (I'm 20 miles south right now) and wait it out but that's another 40-50 miles round trip. And I'd have to back into the campsite.

Thinking I might drain a bit of fluid from the pan (easy enough, pull drain bolt for 5-10 seconds then put it back) and add in a bottle of Lucas trans fix to see if it might help. Unless draining the pan that small bit ends up making things worse due to removing some of the grit?

Thoughts?

It's worth a shot, but if you got slippage I don't know that Lucas can help. I think that stuff is just for swelling seals, but I don't know. There's always memory making, referring back to my original post. Reverse should be a combination of high gear and low gear with one of them locking up with a band and causing some planetaries to spin different or something, I'm skeptical of the Lucas stuff. It's worth considering starting a chain of RV parks that cater to aged vehicles and guys that do their own mechanic stuff, you know for the RV crowd that's trying to only spend SOME to their kids inheritance.

Nah Lucas isn't for swelling seals, I don't think. The one of the big blurbs on the product is "stops slip". I think it's just a thickener, like their oil additive, just less sticky and gooey. It's not cold here (mid 40s at night) so I doubt it'll have a problem getting too cold/thick.

I know it won't magically repair it, the trans is done for. I've known that for a long time really. I should have rebuilt it at a less bad time I guess but it wasn't slipping bad until this month, so yeah. As it is right now, it could last 100 miles, it could last 1,000. Who knows? But if I can help ensure it lasts about another 100 miles without it totally dying and ruining hard parts internally, the $14 for Lucas will be worth it. I'll stay out of third and reverse as much as I can, so maybe it'll survive if it's a clutch pack issue rather than a fluid pressure one.

The Lucas is a pint and a half, I doubt that adding it would overfill enough to matter unless you‘re already above full on your stick. I think the Lucas increases the viscosity to increase pump pressure giving you a little more clamping pressure on your clutches. I’d do it, it may give you some additional miles. The C6 does have a vent that would pump fluid out if it’s too overfilled.

It would be nice if I could put it for off for another 6 months/1,800 miles, but that might be pushing it. :joker:

I guess I'll see how it acts with Lucas added in tomorrow. I'm only a mile away from an AutoZone, so I'll stop there first, add in the Lucas, then make the 17 mile drive to my overnight stop for tomorrow. That should be enough to see if it's acting any better. Might be a waste of $17 but who knows.

I agree, but I'd would also be afraid of being stranded somewhere out in the boonies and end up with a HUGE towing bill as well as a trans rebuild to pay for. I feel that if I was in your situation and thought that my transmission was about to take a dump, I would be looking to get it rebuilt soon.

Yeah, that's the plan. I might just need the Lucas to get me by a couple extra weeks and less than 100 miles of back highway driving. As long as I'm within 100ft of a paved road, roadside will come get me. It's an RV policy so they have to foot the bill for RV towing.

My dad ran Lucas in his old 1994 Honda that had a dying transmission, drove it for 4 years and 80k miles before we finally sold it, never left him stranded. But he also wasn't towing with it, but I think it's worth a try.

Well I posted over on BITOG and someone referred to as the "resident transmission guru" said it sounds like clutches burned out due to leaking seals and that Lucas probably won't help.

I might just take the $17 gamble anyway.

This place sucks, the walmarts ban overnight parking and the trashy truck stop wants $15 to park.

I think I'll go park outside the shop I want to ask tomorrow. It's a tiny bit out of town in the country so maybe no one will hassle me other than the owner. But given the situation, they might be nice about it.

Well offer is still on the table to crash here, I'll even help do the R&R, I know I'm out of the way though.

About how much? Is there a way to dump sewage near where I'd be parked? (i have several long hoses). i have a dog too, she's fine on leash, generally friendly with other dogs, but likes to greet/sniff then be left alone mostly.

I have dumped in a bottle of Lucas but haven't driven any yet since I did, so can't say how it is right now.

I'm in Beaverton to be exact, and I actually have an rv sewer dump on my front porch, I use it to dump my own camper.

Seriously considering it..a loop driveway or back in? reverse is in really bad shape and might be gone in 200 more miles
