Just curious more than anything, but any of you guys hotshot trucking in an IDI? I think most of the companies that use hotshot guys want a "less than 10 year old rig", but I was wondering if anybody was defying the odds.

Most companies have a required minimum tow rating of 10k Ib. With an IDI you'd probably be missing some of the "good" loads. You'd be slow and they would choose someone else. A 460 would be better for a hot shot but gas.....

That's what I figured, but it seems like maybe....... just maybe.......that there might be some like classic car hauling group that would want the "cool factor" of using what is becoming a classic truck moving their stuff across the country.

I know of a couple hotshot rigs with IDIs in them, but they are international s1654s like the one I used to have, not fords.
May not be hotshot, but there sure are a lot of f series rollbacks, wreckers, dump trucks, and flatbeds around that are still earning they're keep everyday. Same principle.
Without a doubt, there's a lot more commercial trucks than pickups around.

It wouldn't exactly be hot shotting, but I would like to do something like that myself. I work at a place that builds spiral staircases. My boss delivers probably 95%+ of them. I would like to be able to deliver the farther away ones that he doesn't want to take. I will use my crew cab for it. With the high fuel prices, I'm not in a big hurry to bring it up to him since I wouldn't make a lot of money.

Yeah, I just bought an '87 wrecker. 6.9, zf5, dual wenches, boom, and a wheel lift. It needs a little more work and then it's going to work. I drive for FedEx ground, and I'm going to start unsticking trucks for the contactor I work for.

FedEx uses contractors? Interesting idea, wonder how well that pays...there's a 7.3 idi tow truck going cheap near me.

I dont suppose that truck is in West Texas? Most everything we have out here is beat to death due to the oilfield. 4 year old trucks look like they were drug out of a gravel pit.

Yes. That's how Fed Ex works. The drivers that come to your house all work for the contractor, not directly for Fed Ex. As for pay, I have no idea on that. I do know that the driver's don't get paid as much as UPS drivers do, but UPS is all union. I used to have a dirt bike riding buddy who got a job driving for Fed EX. He was there for less than 1 1/2 years before he switched to UPS to get the better pay. Fed Ex works kind of like mail routes do. The drivers who take bulk mail from a regional Post Office to smaller, satellite Post Offices in smaller towns don't for for the USPS. They also work for a contractor. I know a guy who was doing the mail route work before he had a massive stroke at age 37. I went along with him one time when he had to go to our county Sherriff's office to get fingerprinted. When he and the deputy walked out to where I was waiting after it was all done, I told the deputy that something was wrong with that. Most people don't walk into the Sherriff's office and asked to be fingerprinted. That got a laugh from both him and my friend.

FedEx ground uses contractors, but FedEx express are actual FedEx employees. UPS is a union, and is miserable to work for ( I've officially worked for all 3) UPS and Express have to "own" their employees, that's why they pay incredible amounts of money to their employees. But at Ground, when you're done you go home, if you have a decent contractor (and I do) you can have a normal schedule and live a regular life. Ground pays peanuts, but I use it as my cover. You see, I run rural routes and I'm in everyone's back yard with a legitimate excuse. I know where cars and trucks are that would make your mouth water, but ultimately I get riding lawn mowers for free or really cheap, my 2 sons and I fix them a sell them on CL for crazy profit. Riding mowers are a necessity in north west Florida. And NOW I have a tow truck which will expand my profiteering!

There's something that I didn't know. Where I live, there's only Fed Ex Ground as far as I know.

Yes. I've heard that before too.

That's a good side hustle. I knew a guy who did the same thing with vacuum cleaners. He would get them for free or almost free, fix them, clean them up and resell them. He would take Kirby's and polish the metal part up to make it look almost new.
And NOW I have a tow truck which will expand my profiteering!
That's only good planning there.

Yeah, the next time you order from rockauto look at how much more FedEx express cost compared to ground. Express uses airplanes, and gets stuff across the country next day, they usually only handle really expensive, time sensitive stuff. Ground uses semis and might get there in a week............maybe. I'm a Kirby man too.
