I forgot to mention... I got all liquored up last October and got the danged fool idea to add an ounce (30mls) of acetone to the usual mix of 30mls low ash 2 cycle (marine) and 100mls diesel treat per fill. Immediately black smoke almost disappeared at WOT and most importantly my mileage improved by... Best sit down for this... 20%, averaged over the past 6 months.

Exhaust temps actually went down ~5-10%, again on average, which I figger is due to less throttle foot being applied at my typical snail's pace. There's a long climb up the end of Horse Lake road to Interlakes that the old can needed a boot full of right foot to get up in 5th but, I swear on a stack of impeccably virtuous nuns it's got more power.

No sign of anything ugly aside from the driver and if anything the suspected leaky #1 injector appears to have been healed, without resorting to atf or, heaven forbid, actually fixing it. E-gads just saying that gives me the *******! And I'm not the sorta guy what believes in mechanics in a can so... FWIW.

Unless the coolant switch isn't working... I wouldn't run a switch to them. I've wired the fast idle and advance to a pair of toggle switches before, until my coolant switch came in, at the time (2014) the switch was on back order in my area.

Thanks Nero, but I'm looking to do the opposite, switch it off once it's firing smoothly but leave the fast idle as is. I'm not looking to go booting off sooner, I have a long slow drive to the road which could be done sensibly without the advance.

Having so much advance once it's got enough heat in the pre-chamber seems like a pointless thing, no?
Fast idle yes, so long on advance no.
I'm not qualified to answer father on this one. I'll let a pump expert such as Russ chime in.

I am not aware of the IP advance causing any premature wear or other issues from being on at start up. Thus no reason to not leave as is.

But if you are itching to do a project you can-

1) Make the IP advance solenoid completely manual. Run a new +12v wire on a switch placed in the cab to the IP advance solenoid. Just unplug the current wire at the IP advance solenoid and wrap the end in electrical tape.
2) Run a bypass switch for the IP advance. Let’s you turn off the IP if you want or it can be left in standard mode and go off automatically. Unplug the wire from the IP advance. Hook to a wire that goes to a switch in the cab. Run a wire from the other terminal on the switch in the cab out to the IP solenoid.
a) Switch on, IP advance works. (Allows power through to IP advance solenoid.)
b) Switch off, IP advance goes off and does not work. (Does not allow power through to the IP solenoid.)

Thanks very much for that sir. I might try a three way switch with normal, none or just the fast idle on. It's a low current circuit so a relay is overkill, but fuses and tidy looming are a must.

I'll wind up with a momentary button for manual glow plugs, a single throw for the electric lift pump, a three way for the cold start and a front lit dimmer knob to control the disco dance beats and retractable glitter ball.

Another minor head injury has led to further repairs. I removed the box, removed the hopelessly rotten rear tank, fixed anything that looked even a little suspicious and welded on a trailer hitch.

Not shown is a pair of auxiliary fuel lines that will soon be connected to a discount tidy-tank, aka a 205 litre fuel drum that'll be strapped into the front of the box and controlled with a new tank selector, also not shown.

That's a "new" rad temporarily installed until the new hoses arrive, from a local Ford wrecker I only just discovered lurking up Exeter Rd. I also bought a new right side vent window for those with eagle eyes, likely going in mañana. I'll follow up with the finished result shortly.
