I sanded the area on the damper with the line
if the magnetic probe is not close enough to flywheel or is not connected properly, timing unit will display the correct RPM but the degrees shown will be the negative value of the offset programmed into the unit ".
Again, I'm fairly sure if you take off the spring from the outside of the probe you will get a better fit and finally get a true reading as long as the damper isn't covered in gunk or corrosion. I tried cleaning out the probe receptacle with a drill bit, small wire brush, and sand paper but in the end that little spring was the whole problem.

In my experience, if the injector line isn't clean enough, your timing amount and rpm will jump around, not read a solid -20. If it's reading a solid -20, but has a good rpm number, you likely aren't close enough to the balancer. I've had to run a 5/16 drill bit down the hole on one to get the rust out before. There's also a groove on the balancer that the probe needs to see that you can clean up with a wire brush too.

FWIW, I brush/sand enough off the line to get both the clamp and the transducer ground clip on it. They say you can attach the ground clip to anywhere on the engine, but it needs to have a good connection, so why clean 2 spots to bare metal?

Well I tried agian , when I rev it up i was getting lower numbers , but negative. when I shut down the truck , the unit read -7. So i thought i would try moving the pump a dime width toward driver. Same results all kinds of negative numbers when i shut it down it displayed -15.3. Also when running at 2000 RPM my Truck was smoking like hell. So at this point pretty much had enough, also the pump leaks , i dusted it with powered chalk, seems to be coming out of barrel on back of pump. Phoned R&D removed the Pump and i"ll be sending it back. He thinks he had some substandard O rings , and may of got pinched. Never seen the Truck smoke like that , not sure if fueling could cause that much smoke or if I have valve seal / piston ring issues.

>snip< The magnet probe in the longer of the two tubes passenger side engine crank dampner , which i did not clean. I try agian make sure i clean everthing with alchol , hook up the Timing Meter to battery first , and rev to 2000 RPM . Sure hope it works. Thanks .
To re-confirm: as I recall (from a few years ago) the magnetic probe is to be inserted into the tube on the RIGHT as you are facing the front of the damper, not the one on the left, which is a sight hole for the 0 deg. timing mark on the damper (when using a timing light) and is closest to the passenger side fender. I think that the tube for the magnetic probe is offset by 20 degrees from the one used for a timing light.

Fixnstuff that is all correct.

Chicken Bones as Fixnstuff points out make sure you are in the hole to the right that does not say 0 next to it.

FYI the correct probe for the Ford as I recall did not fit in the left side hole. Only the right side hole. But many have bought the Tech Time on eBay and those where for Hummers as I recall. So it may fit on the left.

The reason when you use the timing light method it needs to have an advance feature is because IH/Navistar did not put a 8.5* mark on the timing tab. So you set the timing light to 8.5* advanced and then line up the damper mark with the the middle of the hole at TDC. When you do that you are 8.5* BTDC.

@chicken bones did you ever get a light and get your truck timed? I just went in halves with a buddy on a tech time unit with a light, hoping to give it a shot this week. Sounds like you had a heck of a time…
