Hello,
I have a 1993 7.3 idi that locked up going down the road on my son and I. All was fine, then a metallic crunch and we coasted to the side of the road to wait on a wrecker for 4.5 hours. Anyone who hasn’t spent 4.5 hours on the side of the road with a 6 yo son just hasn’t truly lived. Any ideas? Anyone know of a 7.3 idi or better yet a 7.3 idi with a turbo for sale anywhere around East Texas, Western Arkansas, or Louisiana?? Thanks for any help and or ideas!!

Well that’s not good. I’m assuming that oil leak is new. In that case, I’d say there’s a decent shot you threw a rod on 7 and maybe 8. Look closely with a flashlight between the starter and the oil pan. I bought my truck with a known bad engine in it that had tossed 7&8. I new there was no saving it, and was actually able to start it on 6 cylinders. Some day I should post the video of that.

Yes Sir that was the new oil leak after the event. I will check out the 7&8 thank you. Any leads on a replacement motor or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Ok the people laughing hysterically is the best part, adds so much to the video! Cause that is hilarious!
Yeah, that would be my wife. She was legitimately cracking up over that, as evidenced by the expert camera action of rotating the phone in the middle of it. She’s pretty good for putting up with me dragging projects like that home.

You are blessed have a Wife that supports your Interests
and Habits.
I have a great Wife like that, but it goes both ways.
When she finds shoes she likes, I tell her buy one in every color.
I guess that could go for trucks too?

Start calling junk yards. There are still quite a few IDI's out there. I am building a 7.3 right now to replace the 6.9 in my '85 F-350 that cracked the #4 main web. I got the core out of Griffin Auto Salvage in Grovespring, MO. Bit of a drive from east Texas, but not terrible. The guy on the other end of the line said they had purchased a fleet of trucks from a cement company out of St. Louis and had quite a few of our favorite motors in inventory yet.

From here, my hunch is that that engine is done for. The fastest, cheapest, easiest way to get that truck back on the road is going to be a good used engine. If it has in fact thrown a rod or two, you will likely be looking for a new crank and a couple of rods in addition to the other parts and machining cost of a normal rebuild.

FrozenMerc. I just called Griffin Auto Salvage in MO and they said that they had not any early Ford parts to speak of. The guy also said that there is a Griffins auto salvage yard somewhere in Georgia. He went on to say that they had not bought any cement trucks in the past few years. Either he was lying to me or did know what he was talking about or something got miscommunicated to me. Can you clarify?
