I found this little slotted screw in the back of my valley pan.

I do not recall coming across any hardware similar to this while replacing my engine. My first thought is something needed on the injection pump but I don't see anything obvious missing on it.

Any ideas?

That looks like an adjustment screw, like the idle screw. Have you checked all the linkages?

Yes, I gave everything a good look and inspected my spare IP.

Thanks for looking. I don't recall anything like it on the turbo assembly either.

Maybe it's just a screw that someone just dropped in by mistake from a handful of screws when replacing something else and they couldn't find it to get it back out.

Certainly possible...
The odd thing is that I've owned her for 11 years and replaced multiple injector sets, IP's, engine, turbo and dropped the transmission twice. It has never been to a shop.
The screw would have to been dropped by me from an unrelated project or rattled out of a component.

Is it a rocker cover screw? I know some had screws instead of hex head bolts. Does it hold a bracket for a linkage on? Maybe it holds down the glow plug controller.

My GPC is fastened with bolts and the VC's also use bolts with the little winged washer spreaders.

Vrv for auto??

Nope, VRV screws are originally pan head Philips head screws. I put in stainless steel hex head bolts on my RV because one screw was missing and the other was nearly impossible to get at due to the fuel filter being on the driver's side on a van chassis. That's probably why the missing one was missing, it was probably removed during turbo install back in 1985 and couldn't be put back in easily after the fact. Hex heads make it much easier, you just have to be careful with the amount of leverage you have with a wrench, so you don't crush the plastic mounting points of the VRV.

Plus, OP's truck is E4OD, which has no need for VRV.

I found all sorts of stuff in my valley pan, including about a dollar in change. I wouldn’t worry about it, it probably fell out of somebody’s shirt pocket. I am super curious what it goes to though.
