Either can work. I used a relay because I tapped an ignition switched power source from the radio fuse.

Use a relay/solenoid. If you want toggle switch control, you can trigger your relay/solenoid with a switch. It's nice to tie in your fuel shut down circuit to that switch also so you don't accidently run the truck every now and then, with no lift pump on.

You really should use a relay or solenoid, just make sure it's constant duty rated.

I use a generic plastic one and it's holding up fine. The Holley red calls for a 7.5A fuse so you know it's less than that, probably actually pulling 5A, so it doesn't need a very heavy duty relay.

I agree that the pumps don't draw much at all, and to your point, I only use a 5 amp fuse.
I went with a solenoid because I wired in a fuse block that runs a couple other things along with the Holley red for "key on" accessories and wanted something a little heavier.

Thinking of putting a electric pump on my 85 6.9. Looking at using the crank side of the ignition switch to start the pump during crank mode. As the engine starts I am asking if the oil pressure switch could keep the pump running during normal operation . The only thing for this thinking is that in a accident or a engine failure the pump would shut off. Not sure at this time if the oil switch is hot or ground. Any ideas

If it's like old Dodges, it's ground. I had a 78 Dodge van where the dummy "engine" light was tied to an oil pressure switch. Suddenly it was flickering one day. Turns out when I had the doghouse cover off, the sensor wire got pulled/knocked loose without me noticing, and it was bouncing against the transmission bell housing. Being a ground wire, it made the light flicker as it made and broke contact with ground.

Might need to install a second pressure switch in same location . Seems like the pump should quit running when the oil pressure is gone. There are a lot of grate installs in the form with many different ways of doing it.

There are also 3 pin oil pressure switches. The center pin closes to ground without oil pressure, and the other two pins are connected when there is pressure.

Here’s a sample wiring diagram. You could add a momentary switch to bypass the pressure switch for priming use.

What solenoid did you go with?

I went with a napa 4 post constant duty solenoid. I paid $50 because napa always gives me a warranty, but you can easily find the same one for half the price on the interwebs.

Can I mount the pump where the stock water separator was? This pump seems like it has more then enough pull. Is it really an issue to be that far from the tank selector?

The body of it needs to be grounded, so assuming your mounting point is ground, then yes. I have a 3 pole one like that on my RV, but it's disconnected right now since I went to LifePo4 house batteries. The solenoid was to connect lead acid house batteries to the alternator for charging when driving. I replaced it back in 2019 because the old one was dead. I dunno if it's a continuous duty one or not, but it was cheap on ebay (new old stock), and it hasn't burned out yet despite getting insanely hot when it's on for a long time.
