Hello all, back again,

There's nobody around here that has any understanding of automatic gearboxes, I understood that hot rodders here (France) go to Holland or Germany if they have such problems, I asked for a quote there, and depending on it's between 2 and 3000€ that's too much for my wallet.

I'm thinking of buying the ATSG book and update for the E4OD and attack the beast myself.

does these books have the latest upgrades?

does anyone of you have any/such experience with it?
or are there too many special tools or whatsoever involved?

You will need both copies of the ATSG guide for the E4OD. First copy covers the basic E4. What you have. The second is the update manual. It will cover the update to the 98 model year.

The manual will have the special tool list in the text.

My tranny is in a shop now, It's way too complicated for me, and I have not the correct tools to do this.
I've seen some specialists, and they convinced me that for a novice this is some gearbox....
They dissected already the convertor, and they told me it was completely burned.
When I took the gearbox out of my truck, it didn't smell burned or nothing???
Also I have to admit, that when "It" happened, I was unaware of that when you drive with a trailer in the mountains, you best push that OD button, to switch it off....
I think now I never ever forget that any more :-(

can anyone explain me while the convertor is burned, the fluid isn't completely black or smells burned?

apparently the convertor burned due to the OD still being engaged while running a trailer in mountainous terrain.

Maybe it's the lock up part of the convertor that's burned? Was it locking and unlocking a lot?

I didn't see it now,
But with what I know now from E4OD's and my stupid action, it has to be the lock up part.

I've seen that at that time I wrote this as well:
"Also I noticed that at about 60 miles at 2000 rpm the E4OD started to hunt, once and a while, about 200 rpm plus, and then back again at 2000 rpm???"

could that be the "locking and unlocking" that you mean?

Yes. That certainly sounds like it. When locked, the convertor doesn't slip. That lowers the RPM a few hundred and gives you better fuel mileage.

And the only way to avoid this disaster is to push the "OD" button in trailer usage and mountainous terrain?

I thought that a stock convertor had three discs?
And the man at the shop told me he couldn't put more discks in there, but could do something with higher pressure?

This E4OD is a 1989, early model, behind a diesel.
I've brought it to a trans repair shop, and he told me to contact me when he opened her up, and together we discuss what to do if mod's were necessary.
Until today I didn't hear a thing from them, so I assume when this continues he is gonna replace all factory goodies??? without contacting me.
of course my truck will drive after that. (after all, it did when it left the factory.) but are there any unwanted things to be expected?

Unwanted things would be aluminum planetary carriers. Early center support bushing. Non hardened sun shell to list a few things. There are a number of upgrades for the 89 model year. enough to warrant a book of updates.

well, being a trans shop, it should not be necessary that I tell them their trade, though when I turned my trans in, the appointment was made to communicate well, and he told me that he contact me when he opened the trans to discuss what he found and what he was to do about it, and it's that part which untill now doesn't get realised.(which worries me a bit)

This may be redundant, and unnecessary but if you have the time..
There is a YouTube channel where a shop dismantles transmissions, and the mechanic talk about each step, points out potential flaws and points of failure, and provides detail (Precision Transmission)

He has done several E4OD's. Some things he points out: Using the Diesel components(Steel) rather than the gas equivalents (Aluminum), using different planetaries and a few other upgrades as well as signs of wear.

Here are several videos focusing on E4ODs with lots of details.
(watching these describes things simply but in detail)
