About a year ago a friend of mine called me up, "You want a free Mercedes"?
My son`s car got hit at work and had it towed home. Been sitting in front of his house, and the Insurance was dragging their feet. The City of Reno, Nv. wanted it off the street, or they would impound it.

Took a look at it, and then was working on how to get it up on my trailer, as the L/F suspension was ripped out and sitting on the ground.
Two days later he calls and said Insurance paid him off, $4000. Crap, there went my free car.

Found out where it went, to a place called Copart, a huge yard north of Reno.
Find out you can not come off the street and buy. You need to be a Broker, Dealer, Body Shop etc...

Check on line at home, find out I can get registered etc.... sign up pay a fee.
Two weeks later car comes up with a buy now of $650. Hit buy...but have to go through a Broker. Sign up with one in Portland,Or. soon as I sign up and pay his fee, I own the car. Then there is the Copart fee, and then you can`t go a pick up you car, they ship it to you...w- t- f???
Guy hauls it to our place (60 miles) on a 16ft car trailer. Free car = $1650.

Still not a bad deal.
Got an E-Mail my registration is coming up, so Iam thinking...F250....HMMM
So here is a link to all the F250`s they have listed.

Copart looks interesting. Thanks.

There's a saying that goes, "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes."
That said, I have a 1985 280SE (grey market) I got cheap and it's been great for the 8? years that I've had it. It's a big part of the reason I just bought my '87 F-250. I was fed up with all the newer car "extras" that make them tough to fix yourself and are expensive to have repaired in order to get an inspection sticker. My Benz has been a joy to maintain and repair. Back then I think they were designed by engineers that weren't held back by accountants.
If your Benz is of that era, I do have some spare parts that I could part with.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Couple yrs ago friend tipped me off bout Copart. I signed up, IIRC posted by CC a "Bid Fee" or something & bid on a few up here in my area Or & Wa. Didn't catch any. Decided I got too many projects already so backed off.
Get my shop built & it'll probably be "LOOK-OUT-WORLD"!!! LOL LOL

At the sake of sounding like a Gen Y?, Z? ...Gen whatever.. there are some great videos on Youtube about Copart and how it works and how best to use it..

I was once, and bought a couple crown vics and cadillacs off there. Wanted to buy a vette with body damage and create my own roadkill vette cart, but it never happened. All the ones I bought were less then 1000 bucks. Ran it through the business license on the shop and no questions were asked. Expect to pay double with fees, taxes, etc from what you bid.

A year or so ago they changed it so you could no longer have a free membership, and had to go through a broker or dealer license. I befriended a guy that has one, and for 500 he'll bid whatever I want on my behalf. He'll be doing paperwork, transport, and other assorted crap, so the 500 is not as outrageous as it sounds.

About 10 yrs ago I did some work for the founder of Copart. He was moving to the Nashville area from California at the time, and had just bought Alan Jackson’s place. He was a super nice guy, and very down to earth. He even went so far as to invite some of the guys on my crew to bring their kids out to do some fishing on the ponds on his property. We ended up doing all of the floors in his garages. I seem to remember it being about 70,000 square feet in total. The biggest was this one at 48,000 s.f.
You must be registered for see images attach
At that time I think he said they had over 200 yards around the world, and they handled over 70% of the totaled vehicles in the US. He built all of that from one tow truck and a service station he started in Arkansas when he came home from Vietnam.

48,000 ft sq? I'd have a lot of trouble filling that one up, but boy would I have fun trying!
I don't need to try to sign up on Copart. My boss has been a member for years.

I've had an account at Copart for several years now, and bought around ten rigs. I never had a time I couldn't pick the car up myself. They have made it a little harder to do in person business since the Covid garbage, but I've still been able to pick up and haul my own rigs.

I have flipped about 4 trucks through Co-Part. With a small margin for profit I have to bid wisely and only in the states that allow private party bidding on the site.
