recently bought a 23' van based RV.
quickly found out that it wont tow 10,000 pounds..
im also building a rock crawler to accompany my ranchero on offroad excursions.

so the need for something big has evidently been in my future.

i found something i fell in love with. and the pieces are just falling together.

the Rig.
1962 B700 short short bus, a rig the Wife and I gave the name, "The Drool Bus"
yes it was a whiskey induced conversation and aligned with the shortness of the bus, it fit perfectly.

the Drivetrain.
1992 DTA466
Allison MT643

yesterday, the employees and I dropped the engine in the bus.

today i worked a deal for a 89 IH 4100 flatbed truck, running. that all he wants for the truck is the DT466 removed.

so i will be swapping the bus and the flatbed on to the newer frame.

the 61 is almost done, and i need a RV that can tow 2 vehicles and be fully sufficient.

like i needed ANOTHER project, right??

i wont be happy until all my rigs are completely built by me.
its a curse.

I saw this on FB. Will be pretty cool when finished. I've also got a school bus. Was disappointed at first you weren't going to run an idi, but that dt will be a much better runner. Does the flatbed have good highway gearing? I know free is hard to beat, but highway gear sets for old axles aren't the easiest to come by. I've been looking towards semi trucks w/ air ride, but those seem to be geared in the 3.xx range, which is too low for me. A nice 4.88 would give me comfortable cruising but good pick up too.

i couldnt imagine this thing with an IDI lol
i love those engines, but not for towing.
they are better served putting in a 4000 pound truck with 4 wd
its expensive to create power, but cheap to lower the weight it needs to carry lol

i now have a line on a late 80's IH 4100, guy wants the engine and trans out of it.

im gonna wait for this to get here before i work on this again.

updated frame, rear air suspension, better brakes better steering, and a shat load of parts that will help my pocket!

update.
finally got the parts truck in, and stripped.
gotta deliver the promised goods to the previous owner, which made the parts truck FREE.

now time to cut the grease, and paint then replace all the stuff.

cant wait to see this project keep moving. I have never seen a bus like that before. did some one chop it down in the past or is it really that short? doesnt give you a lot of room to camp in it? are you more thinking of hauling people and sleeping outside in tents?
