Looking for some insight on my truck.

It's a 93 with 101k miles, it's heavy (around 12k) and runs terrible.
Hard to crank after it's sits overnight, smokes a LOT of white fuel smoke when it's cold and generally clears out 2 or 3 miles down the road, after it warms up it runs fair, but has a moderate skip under load around 2500 rpm with a pronounced fuel knock, followed by more white smoke. When it ain't skipping, it pours out black smoke. The cars behind me usually flash lights and turn on wipers. Fuel economy is laughable at 9 mpg.

No oil use, no lost coolant. 8 new injectors and what appears to be a fairly new ip, and no fuel leaks.

What gives? Junky rebuilt injection pump is all I can figure

Where are the injectors from? Are they a pressure matched set? There are lots of people peddling garbage for these trucks.

Have you ever had the timing set? That can make a tremendous difference.

Change the fuel filter and fill the new one with Hotshots Extreme fuel system cleaner.

Injectors are from pensacola diesel, runs the same as the ones I pulled out.

Ran atf through it with no success.

Haven't tried timing it yet, but I guess it's the last stop before ip town

Well if there was no change it's hard to say, but pensacola is in the hall of shame for selling junk so they're certainly not HELPING the matter.

I'm assuming the IP is unknown and was there when you got the truck? Adding new injectors to an old IP can hasten the death of the IP. It has to work a lot harder to meet the pop pressure on new injectors.

How? Did you just dump it in and run it or did you let it soak in the IP overnight?

Timing is definitely worth looking at, but given your symptoms there's something else too. Can only tackle one thing at a time though.


Have you tried testing the injectors while running to see if one isn't firing? I can explain if you don't know how.

There's your first problem. Pensacola Diesel is known for peddling junk. If the IP is also from there, then just be glad that the engine runs at all. Unless you replace your pump and injectors from one of the known good shops, anything else that you do will just be wasting your time and money. Buy from Conestoga Diesel, russrepair.com, Classic Diesel Design, or R&D IDI Performance now, or buy from them later. It's your choice. Harsh? I'm sorry, but it's true. Not what you want to hear? Again sorry, but it's still the truth.

Doesn't bother me one bit that they peddle junk. I've had problems in the past from internet stuff, but I read the stuff you get at the parts house ain't much better, and it's not like you can buy this stuff from Ford or international anymore. Burned a piston out of a healthy 6.0 a few years ago with injectors from oriellys. I will look into some of the mentioned vendors if I need a pump.

I've checked them running by loosening the line, none of them are dead. Even went as far as shooting the exhaust primaries with a ir thermometer to look for cold spots.

Start using Hotshot Diesel Extreme, if not already, from Autozone, etc. Best stuff I've used. Check out their website for discounts & freezies.
Matched injectors from above stated 4 sellers. No crap shoot there.
