I got an 18000lb winch for Christmas and it is going on my car trailer.

It is a lot bigger than the 12000lb winch plate I already have and I don't see any for this size.

I am taking it to a machine shop of sorts (side rant, it is SO SO hard to find machine shops these last 5 years!! They have all closed!) to see if they can bend one and maybe if I am super lucky, drill holes for me haha.

But if they cannot, any ideas?

If you can't find a machine shop, check with local welding/fabrication shops. They should easily be able to do that for you.

1. How does the new winch mount? Is it 4 bolts from the bottom or something different?

2. What does the area you want to mount it too look like? Wood or metal? Are you trying to make it detachable or leaving it on permanently?

Depending on where you're mounting it you could possibly mount the winch down and then just use a heavy piece of angle to mount the fairlead instead of making a whole integrated mounting plate.

If you want to avoid this in the future, mount a 2" receiver hitch on the trailer. This way you still need a mounting plate, but you can use different winches and take it off to store if needed.

Just a thought......
On my car/heavy equiptment trailer I did have a 2" reciever hitch mounted vertically in front of the "bump-rail" on front of trailer. I used, or rather over did using my 12,000# winch mounted vertically in the 2" receiver. Twisted things up a bit as cable worked it's way back & forth across reel.
After it was all over, tweeked a bit, etc. I cut reciever tube off & rewelded it back on horizontally. Now winch can be stuck in reciever tube, used without tweeking etc.
I learn summun ever day.....& it usually costs me!!! LOL

I'll post photos in daytime to explain better. This one has 4 mounting holes on bottom. My old winch and plate were mounted on the top of the front bar at the front of the trailer.

Ideally this one could be mounted on the tongue and that would give me about a foot more of space on trailer for larger vehicles or vehicles with low bumpers.

The floor of trailer is too flimsy to just drill through, at this point I would give up that space just to get this stupid thing mounted!

I am going to check if the clearances on the receiver winch mounts can accommodate this winch. I need 8.5in of width which is about a full inch larger than all the mounting plates I have been able to find.

Like this? Combine these two?

I would look for a higher rated one, but this is just to get an idea of what you mean?

Depending on the setup maybe you could just buy some 1/2" plate and bolt it to the tongue? Just a thought. Looking forward to pictures.

Yup, that's what I was referring to. That would be the most versatile option. A kit like that shouldn't be to hard at all to mount.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
the front bar at the front of the trailer.

Danielle you mention the front bar at front of trailer..... If I visualize what you talking about this is what I calling "bump rail" across front of the trailer.

Anyway my bump rail is about 7-9" tall & made out of 2"x2" sq tubing. My reciever tube was welded vertically front side of bump rail where I could stick winch in vertically & use it. However I tweeked things so I cut off & rewelded horizonally, flat to bump rail to use winch horizonally.
But I think I'm going to redo things & mount it farther frontwards up on tongue sort'a like you mentioned.
Anyway, good luck on your project. There's gott'a be a way to do it to use advantageously.
