hood latch question

my 86 has an inside hood latch. i noticed the cable sheathing is missing in some places and the cable is rusty. if the cable broke how could i get the hood open?

Replace it before that happens. My 93 broke and I got it open but it was tedious. I would think 86 is very similar. Go out and open it and look at the latch, then close it and see if you can get to the release on latch or use extensions and ratchet to unbolt from core support.

Some of our trucks you can reach through the grill and twiddle the backside of the latch to open the hood. I forget which years that would be.

Gandalf is right: on my 1992 the backside of the latch was open and could be actuated by fingers. My 1995 has a more boxed in latch, which is interesting because they are the same body style.

Yours being a bull nose, it may be completely different, but I agree with gnathv: fix it before it becomes a major PITA.

I can on my 87 F250. The cable has been broken since before I got it. It's like second nature to me to open it by just feeling around for the latch and opening it from outside.

My 85 E350 RV has the ancient no-cable style of latch with a big metal handle behind the grill that you pull to do the initial release. It's still a double-latch but without the cable and plastic pull handle setup.
