Does the fuel return line have to go to top of tank? Or could it be towards the bottom?

I am just guessing here, but I would imagine if you returned fuel mid tank or lower, it would back feed the return line due to the gravity, but I could be completely wrong.

I feel that you're right. There is very little (if any) pressure in the return line that comes back to the tank. I'm not sure if it would back feed or not, but I do think that a full tank may put enough pressure into the return system to back up the returning fuel and either cause the engine to run poorly or even make the engine quit running.

Sump kit returns bottom

Does the sump have a return tube that goes to the top of the tank?

Some do some don't. The one that Wes sells does not.
I've thought about this situation and whether it will be an issue or not, the return system will probably be about 5psi but we will see soon. During my thinking about this last year, and looking at the sump pieces, it almost looks like the supply may create a suction flow that helps pull the return back in, like a circular loop versus static push upwards.

I will be returning quite a bit of fuel cause my IP is hot and the electric pump.

Alot of things like this we can speculate for awhile but I end up just testing and see what happens.

I know sumps generally provide better fuel flow but I’m just more concerned about a simple leaking hose or fitting dumping the whole tank on the ground.
