So I was replacing worn out door strikers and I must have put the passenger side one inboard too far. The door shut but it’s visibly further in and I cannot open it. Any tricks to get this door unstuck?

Try having someone pull the handle on the inside while someone else pushes from the outside. It may have to be a swift sharp push (read flying kick to handle).
I did this once as well.

I broke the inside handle off. :Q

I ended up getting it open by getting a t50 socket on a u joint and seven extensions through the window cap, then through a hole and loosening the striker. There were may tries and lots of swearing involved.

the door still wants to stick shut no matter how I adjust the striker. I’m about to put a barrel latch on the damned thing.

Could it be one of the nylon bushings on the latch inside the door?

I’m wondering if it isn’t something like that. If the slop has added up enough that it won’t open the latch enough with the new, properly sized striker. For now, I put the old one back on and it works. I’m going to see about getting a replacement latch assembly.

At least my driver door is good now, new hinge pins/bushings and striker and it opens/closes nice and doesn’t rattle any more.

Could you post a picture of the new striker, and the piece mounted on the door post, the part which does not move? I have the feeling that the barrel section is supposed to have a nylon sleeve, though mine does not. My truck may need the same attention.

Thanks.

I'll try and get some photos posted up after I get home today. My new ones do have a nylon sleeve, the old one doesn't, just some plastic residue. I figure it had one when new, but it wore/broke off over the years.

No good repair is complete without ^^^^

And I highly recommend finding one of the all metal interior door handle replacements--couldn't even tell ya how many plastic handles I've broken.

Yep, got one ordered from my local Advance (formerly CarQuest) and made sure it's metal. The driver's is already metal, probably some bad words behind that too.

When the plastic Bushing wears out or goes missing, the door rattles or you have to slam it to get it to latch.

I picked a lot of Strikers off of trucks, vans and some SUV type Fords off the Hatch area at PNP.
My 86 didn`t come with it but later they added the metal piece around the Striker. Some of them you can unscrew the bolt and slip off the plastic bushing, and some will not unscrew.
The passenger door side usually gets less wear and better shape.

Replaced both on the 86, what a difference.

Did a Google search for f250 strikers and see they sell just the Bushings. get a bag of 50 for around $16. Never seen them sold separately. Enough for2 life times....LOL

Dorman sells the bushings in a small bubble pack as well at most auto parts stores. After I broke a metal handle or two I made my own out of an old tedder tine. Problem fixed permanently.

The hinge bushings can cause that too, which wears out the striker bushing. I have that that problem on my F250's driver's side door. I tried replacing the hinge bushing/pin but I couldn't line it up right myself so the hinge bushings have gone bad again, so it's back to slamming it. If I was still driving it as my primary vehicle and not storing it 99% of the time, I'd give in and take it to a body shop and have them fix it properly.

Love the homemade handle!

here is a photo of the old and new strikers. Old one is 1/2” diameter. The bushing makes the new one about 11/16”

My buddy welded a piece of rebar onto his handle. Then he realized he did the wrong angle and it was exactly the same as before. LOL

I welded the tine to a piece of plate steel notched just like the original handle. It bolts in place. I kept breaking handles because the latch itself was worn out. I ended up replacing it and the cable with a whole new assembly so I bet the plastic handle would now work fine again.
