I've discovered my truck idles so ROUGH when I don't doctor the fuel with dieselkleen... However, with dieselkleen in the tank its idles like a gasser.. I like the performance it gives, but what causes the need for dieselkleen? Is my LuLuBelle addicted? is there a recovery group, will she ever be normal?? one inquiring mind wants to know.... your assistance and opinions are highly appreciated...................now, where did I leave my keys?

When these trucks were made, diesel fuel was nice and thick like a thinner oil, and that provided all the lubrication the IP needed, but now, mostly due to emissions and refining reasons, the new ultra low sulfur diesel fuel is way too thin for older diesels and doesn't provide the lubrication needed. You can add 2 cycle oil for the same results. It is just giving the IP the lubrication it needs,so naturally the engine will smooth out.

How much 2 cycle oil do you add? Still follow the instructions on the bottle for the per gallon? Seems like a lot?

16oz. per tank, so a quart split between both tanks. Any cheap 2 cycle works great.I try and buy it by the gallon so I am not always running out of it,plus it is cheaper that way. I do this in all my diesel engines, since they are older then 2000.

When I first bought the truck and read about additives, I tried Howes Diesel Treat because it's what the local place I get fuel in my small town had. I could tell right away the noise difference with the Howes additive. Later I bought a couple bottles of Power Service's winter additive. It's not Diesel Kleen; I don't remember the exact name, but it's in a white bottle. It's what we use at work and I found it on sale so figured I'd try it. I think it's definitely louder with this stuff. When I run out, I'm going to try the Diesel Treat again. Once summer comes around, I intend to try the 2-stroke oil too.

I have used that same power service you're talking about, and it seems to only be good for anti-gel purposes. Like you said, it doesn't smooth the engine out any. I usually just run 2 cycle year round, and in the winter add anti-gel. I never have trouble with this combination.

There is no reason not to run 2 cycle in the winter, assuming you add anti-gel just like you would with straight diesel.

There is none, really. Not sure why I didn't just think to use two additives together. After seeing this thread I have been reading about lots of different additives, and intend to try just that. Sometimes, the answer is right there in front of me but I don't see it; can't see the forest through the trees type thing.

On the same note, my Ranger was having issues once and I just could not get it to run right. I had just done a carb swap and was working on tuning and all of a sudden it would not idle or anything, and was running way lean. I pulled the carb and re-rebuilt it, blew everything out with air, tore things apart multiple times for a whole Saturday. I asked my wife to watch something while I tried to start it and she said it was on fire! When I looked, there was a cap that had popped off a vacuum fitting in the manifold and what she saw was the fuel/air vapor mix in the manifold wafting out through that fitting. Put a cap on and it ran just fine. I was just convinced it was something with the carb that I had screwed up.

In PA don’t they treat at the pump with an antigel? Can too much be harmful?
The reputable stations do, but I always add a little splash to be safe, since you don't know if they still have some of the summer fuel in the tank and they just mixed it. The little amount of anti gel that comes in the fuel, plus the little splash I add, is doing no harm at all. In fact it is a lot better, then mixing gasoline in the fuel like they recommend back in the day.

I've been running two stroke oil for years. I buy the gallon jugs of Super Tech at Walmart and usually add a quart to a full tank of fuel. Probably more than needed but today's fuel sucks.
