Overdo to get this build thread going, this is a project we got from @Mike Linger and @aggiediesel01 earlier this year for an engine build and some upgrades. The truck is a 91 F250 4x4, originally with a na 7.3, 5 speed and D50 front, Mike and Steven earlier this year had the truck repainted and swapped a Dana 60 in and brought it down to us for the rest of the work to get it driving. Previously he drove down his 93 IDIT work truck with over 300k on the clock for an engine exchange with a fresh engine, and pulled the IDIT for refreshing and swapping in the 91.

Currently we are going through the IDIT, and getting it ready for some upgrades. The block had very minimal bore taper and ring ridge despite the miles, but had a decent amount of sludge buildup with most of the oil squirters clogged and 41 thou ring gap on the top rings, it was due for some fresh parts. We stripped the block down and ran it through the system one, and cleaned out all the oil galleys and coolant ports.

Engine back on the stand, crank installed after a polish at the machine shop, new main bearings all within half a thou. Piston rings haven’t come in yet so after checking rod bearing clearances we dropped the shop trucks old oil pan on and went to painting.

While watching paint dry, pistons and rods got assembled after cleaning all the carbon out of the ring lands in the pistons and a polishing up the wrist pins. More tomorrow..

I've seen that one time on another 93 IDIT. The owner was getting ready to sell it, but an exhaust valve guide wore enough to start the chuffing. I R&R'd the head. The cylinders looked like they had maybe 50,000 miles on the engine. It was the original one with 306,000+ miles. If I had a way to get the money, I wouldn't have been scared to buy it at all. It's strange how that happens every so often.

I think the keystone rings help a lot, I’ve got three other IDITs here we’re building with similar wear despite the miles.

That was the only one that i'd seen. Most of them were like the ones that we talked about with .020"+ wear in the rear two cylinders .010"-.015" wear in the next two forward and the rest would be standard with maybe .004"-.005" wear. I've also seen a 6.5 that lasted 309,000 miles before the engine had to be replaced. I would have sworn that it was impossible, but it happened once. The 6.2/6.5 usually seemed to need an engine replacement from 150,000-200,000 miles to average it out.

HHP sabotages again, wrong piston rings showed up saturday and replacements are delayed with the holiday this week, so bottom end is waiting on rings so it can be ball honed and assembled for checking piston to valve clearance with the torque cam. Crank is final installed with the caps torqued, spins beautifully.

Finished up the 110 pump and 3582, good looking pair!

I bet this build rings up closer to the $10k mark than the $5k mark once it's done. Sure Will be pretty though

Wes, I’m curious to see how you check the piston valve clearance.

Probably by putting Play Doh on top of the pistons and rotating the engine over. That's how I did it.

Looking good Wes, we're excited about how it's turning out. I've got a bunch of irons in the fire right now but I'll try to get some pics and history of what else we've done to the truck up here over the holidays. How on earth are we going to keep that pump and turbo that clean and shiny??

On a side note. The thread title should be wa5moe as that's my dad's Amateur Radio call sign. Not sure if the mods can change it or not but that's what it should be.

I degree the cam with cam wheel comp4787, used idi lifters converted to solid lifters to take the hydraulic portion of the lifter out of the equation, use comp cams adjustable pushrods 7706-1 to take any lash out of the valve train, comp cams 4758-2 checker springs in place of the valve springs and play do each piston to check valve to piston clearance, not hard but a bit tedious, better to know before you stick it in the truck.

So I no longer feel special with my home made solid lifters that I use for this.

Fed ex finally got us our rings, and back together the bottom end goes, even with 300k+ miles and a ball hone ring gap was on the bottom of the spec, .015” on the top compression rings and .060” on the second. Refreshed heads and studs installed along with the cam and lifters. Ended up using a stock cam.

I remember that you said that you were waiting on rings. Since Fed Ex pulled up as I was sitting at your gate talking to my customer, I think I saw them being dropped off.
