hello fellow burners
thanks for all you help over the years you have help me solve a lot of idi issues
I searched but can't find my answer on forum

1992 ford e350 with bank turbo 164k

new injection pump and injectors ( didn't solve problem tick)

timing set at 8.5

the motor has a subtle tick noticeable from idle on up the rpm range. but goes away when i get on it hard then come back when off the throttle and when just cruising at an easy pace. been like this since i bought it and hasn't gotten any worse.

would a failing wristpin cause this? or some thing in valve train. any ideas how to diagnose this without pulling the engine out for a teardown .

When I has a small tick like that I found out it was a bent valve. The best way to rule out mechanical problems is a compression test

This probably isn't your problem, but, I once had a very noticeable tick and it turned out to be a starter where the gear/Bendix that extends to engage the flywheel failed and was making contact with the flywheel while driving. Like I said probably not your issue but a lot better than an engine issue.

Use a 30" piece of hose & listen to exhaust manifolds (leak) and valve covers like a stethoscope for the tick.

Exhaust leak, mine has a crack in manifold rear drivers side and it sounds like a lifter knock. just a loud click until you put your foot into it.

Its not uncommon for idi's (more so the 7.3 due to tighter valve seals) to develop worn valve guides (more so the exh guiders rather then the intakes) and develop a certain "tick/huff". It's also not uncommon to have a lifter stick a bit and cause the same sorta noise.

Often the lifter tick will go away with some oil changes and run time. Sometimes several thousand miles. And often times a worn exhaust guide will still last a long time before it becomes more of a problem.

Not saying that's what's going on for you, but it can be a thing.
