7.3 IDI Terrible smoke

I just looked at your original post again, if the fuel transfer was bad enough to cause excessive smoke, you wouldn't have good power or easy starting. I would strongly recommend either finding someone who can time it or advance it little by little and see if it improves.

Well, it's not a problem anymore . .

Took the truck down the block and went to pull out on the highway and it sent a rod straight out the side of the block.
Will probably take the cylinder heads off and see if those can be saved but I doubt it

Head Gasket can still have normal compression under startup cranking, but when it start spinning 650 rpm or more, air starts seeping in; without water penetration into head Gasket. Good luck

White/grey diesel smoke makes me think its either bad timing (which can be very difficult to time by ear) or not enough fuel to properly atomize and ignite the fuel.

if it starts at 40f with no glow plugs then the compression is plenty good.

I bet money it was 180 out this is known to cause the smoking and very odd running and causes them to catastrophically grenade due to cylinder washing aka raw fuel going into oil and making the oil more diesel than oil and a inner rod becomes a outer rod and leaves a nice hole in your block and if it doesn't go that route it will try to melt your valves / pistons been there done that luckily I figured out what was going on as one said look for silicone and sines of a IP being swapped out the wrong way LOL when you find these motors dead most of time the issue is someone swapped the IP vie the timing cover bolts and not the IP bolts and get them so far out of time they grenade themselfs and believe it or not 180 out they run weird but still pretty well just well enough to make you think is something else wrong and them boom bang and a large cloud of smoke and coolant flowing everywhere occurs.
