Guaranteed that if you spent a quarter of the cost of buying a new truck, and you fixed everything that is even questionable on this truck... You'll have a better truck than a new one.

The new one may have all the bells and whistles. It may be faster and/or more powerful. But it will cost you an arm and a leg if it so much as sneezes. And after a few months or a year, it WILL be 'down' just as often as this one is.

The old one will be more reliable. If SHTF, it will be much better because you can fix it yourself, unlike the 'everything computer controlled' new one. I have even made my own small parts for my trucks.
Just add the newer truck will (probably) get better mileage and ride better and I'l COMPLETELY agree with this.
A while back, a friend and I were talking about older trucks vs. newer trucks. He said that his 2010 F150 will go up and down the road better than my 1985 with a 7.3. I told him that since I have no issues holding highway speeds then it was absolutely impossible that his can g up and down the road better than mine. End of discussion.

If you have to put $30,000 into an old truck to make it like new and get 15mpg, or spend $60,000 on a new truck and get 20mpg, how many miles before that 5mpg difference pays for itself at $3 per gallon?

Of course, you aren't likely to put a full $30k into the old truck, and you aren't likely to get a decent new one as cheap as $60k.

Replace a part on the old one, vs replace a part on the new one, as well. And it's getting to where you are putting the new truck into the shop, within the first year.

All that fancy... that is impossible for you to repair yourself, and is very expensive (to buy OR repair),... even if you add the fuel mileage as a bonus, ends up a lot more expensive than the cost of the extra gallons of fuel.

That sounds suspiciously like maths. We don't talk like that here. Take that crazy talk to a Toyota forum

The correct answer is: oodles and gobbins of miles to break even. It's-not-even-going-to-last-that-long miles. Not-even-a-Toyota-lasts-that-long miles.

Today I left work an hour early (darn it anyway) so that I could go pick up the shirt that I had made for my niece's 15th birthday. There's a place 20 miles away that makes signs, does custom printing, and I don't know what all else. I think the overall effort was well worth it for a good gag gift.

Between the choice of a old truck I assembled with the options I chose and a new truck with questenable plastic junk, more electronics than I desire and under emission regulation. If your telling me that the old truck will be half the cost to be equivalent, then why you trying to persuade me into thinking a new truck is a valed option? Maintaining that questenable plastic junk, eccesive electronics and emission stuff could cost more than I save in fuel.

Kinda spent my day off from work tinkering. Been dealing with either a waistgate issue or a bigass boost leak. I have the waistgate locked and it will run up to 15 psi and stop there. Well that is right where I want it, but my egts when doing anything other than driving normal get pretty hot and it’s not boosting near as quickly as some other guys who have near the same setups. I am going to try and get a boost leak tester or make one and check it out.

Guys my wife is constantly on my butt about the $$$ I spend on my '89. I told her that if I wanted to purchase a new Ford, my payments would more than the mortgage. I keep telling her that $100 - $200 per month for add ons and repairs is not a bad deal. I dont drink , smoke cigarettes or chase large women, so overall its not a bad hobby to keep old LuluBelle running. LuluBelle needs ether to start some mornings but she takes me work and is reliable...so i call it a win-win situation. I dont really care what she looks like so long as I can travel where and when I want. The limited slip diff I installed has helped tramendously in the west Texas sand......So gentlemen if your spending $$$ on your rig, its $$$ well spent!

Of course, you aren't likely to put a full $30k into the old truck, and you aren't likely to get a decent new one as cheap as $60k.

Ok, let's do the math, it's simple enough to do in your head. Difference between 60,000 and 30,000 = 30,000. Divided by $3.00/gallon is 10,000 gallons. @ 15 mpg is 150,000 miles. That's a lot of miles!

Let's not forget about depreciation too. A new vehicle depreciates. Mine are fully depreciated. :)

The newer vehicles are actually getting more difficult to repair. Check this out: heater box replacement on a 2015 escape...because it's plastic. Both front doors have to come off!! 4:50 in this video
xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media

It took me 15 minutes to replace the heater core in a friend's '88 F-150 a couple weeks ago.

I'll stick to my old old trucks until I'm forced to drive an electric vehicle.
