So I am in the works with available time and resources of building up a turbo'ed, bored 6.9L with studs. I've posted in another thread on what I have as far as turbo kit goes.

The original turbo was in fair shape save for a pin hole in the hot side and in the end out of curiosity, I wrecked it as I was taking it apart. So there in I did some research on the forums for Turbo IDI information and I picked out this turbo off of eBay.

The price dropped considerably after I had made my purchase.

In case the pictures don't post...
Cold side: A/R 0.70
Inducer 66.6mm Exducer 84mm

Hot Side: A/R 0.96
Inducer 74mm Exducer 64.5mm

I forget now what all that I looked up and learned before I picked this turbo and flow charts were hard to find that were accurate. I think I was doing a comparison and basing it off of the specifications of the factory turbos that I was able to find accurate information on here. And this one was bigger from what I could tell but I am unsure as to determining what more this turbo could do compared to a factory turbo.

So now to someone who has the knowledge I would like to ask, hopefully with the information provided where does this turbo land as far as operating range and potential output for a rebuilt .040 over bore 6.9L? Not any specific power number really.

No idea. Someone who know turbos can probably come up with something, but it will likely cost you new turbo prices.

As I said in the rotomaster thread, I have the turbo engineering manifold similar to your BAE kit. I'm doing mine low budget. I was looking for one off a ford/New-holland 6.6 or 7.8, but found a dt466 turbo instead. I then bought a new cartridge for it cheap, and I'm rolling with it.

To get the "correct" turbo, it'd likely cost close to or over 1000 bucks. I've got around 250 into mine. I was planning on having the manifold and hotside cerakoted, but covid has that plan messed up, so I might just install it bare. I was told my turbo will be a pig on the smaller 6.9/7.3, but I figured our engines rev higher then the dt466 so it will work good enough. That, and I feel that whatever boost this thing makes, it will be better then being NA.

@Thewespaul who runs Classic diesel designs as well as @typ4 and a few others build turbos and injection pumps as well those would be the guys to talk to about turbo power with graphs

So your question is what will your power output be with the new turbo? I think that depends upon your pump and turbo combo. An oversized turbo will be doggy and will only build boost under hard acceleration an undersized turbo will build boost quickly but will choke out. Outside of that jason1377 is correct about Wespaul being the person to talk to about your specific combo.

I would be scared to throw that on such a rare and expensive engine, buy once cry once as they say...

That is half the cost of a ClassicDieselDesigns turbo rebuild service

I suppose the 6.9IDI is sort of rare. I've got a pair of the 7.3 IDI's one turbo and one non turbo. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with them. I had a 1986 F250 with the 6.9l in it. I bought it for $800 and sold it for $1600 and have regretted selling it almost immediately.

I want to see how this turbo works for this motor and I disagree these motors are dime a dozen. I have 5 and know where there are 10 more I can have for pretty much nothing maby it's just where I live

It depends where you're at.

They're not rare by any means where I'm at, but not as common as a 350 chevy or 5.3 LS either.

I have a spare, and I'm sure I could find more if need be.

The problem with ebay turbos like this are they are not balanced so they will not last very long compared to a quality built turbo. They also use a mixmatch of knock-off chinese parts that you will not be able to purchase individually to rebuild the turbo when it goes, they are pretty much a throw away unit once they go bad.

That is good to know. I think with the way I plan to set my system up, when and if this one fails, it will make for a fairly easy swap in the future. Maybe all of these turbos come with the same piece of paper but it shows that it was tested and there are relief marks on the turbines like it has been balanced.

As of now the block, heads, and rotating assembly is with the machinist with a down payment. The block has already been rebuilt once at .030 over and it is good to go with another oversize to .040. The rotating assembly will be balanced and the heads are getting all new valves, springs and guides. My time line is going to be late spring to have the engine back which will give me enough time to do other necessary work on the truck before I make the final swap. I have a ZF S5-42 with gas truck ratios in a diesel case ready to go and a new clutch and fly wheel so that will be a step I think I’ll take before The engine swap. Just to work out what I need to do with drive shafts and floor pans and transfer cases etc.
