For the best results, only do one thing at a time. That way you'll know which one helped the most or actually fixed the issue.

Well, update, still hard to start hot I’m not sure what it could be, the injectors are less than 2-3 years old, the IP is brand new, maybe I need to retard it more I don’t know I’m at a loss

My suggestion would be to have the timing set with a meter. You could drive yourself crazy with all of the second guessing while trying to set it without a meter.

Your profile says you’re in TN. Where about? I have a tach & time I picked up a couple weeks ago. I haven’t even hooked it up yet. I’d be willing to help you get it timed if you want to come to me.

I’m outside Murfreesboro, and my shop is in Nashville, so it’s probably a pretty long ride either way . But, the offer still stands.

I’m not sure if this will help any but even when you shut the truck off after getting it hot it’s taking 3-4 cranks to get it to start back up, timing advanced? I really don’t understand I never had a problem with the old IP and I mean it was shot

Did you remove the pump gear when you replaced the pump?? Been there also.

No I did not, didn’t want to make that mistake, I absolutely hate to think it’s that injection pump, maybe it is air intrusion I just could not see air intrusion being a problem warm but not cold

What gets me is the starter will crank and crank and crank then all of the sudden in one hit it’s started

Alright, I’m not sure what to do, I’ll get her timed and until she quits starting run it. Not much else to do, she’s a tough old girl. The injection pump was going out for 5 years, went 2 years without brakes, went a winter without glow plugs, hauled 80% of the miles on her, and now she’s finally getting to be a daily driver. I’ll get it straightened out, I thank you all for the help and taking your time to try and diagnose it. My thinking at this point is, bigger pump, more fuel, stock starter= pain to get going warm. I’m not going to worry about it. I know I may possibly have a air intrusion issue I need to be watching for I’ll get her going, just takes time

When you're cranking and it won't start do you get any white smoke out of the exhaust? I'm wondering if fuel is draining back and I'm assuming you still have the stock mechanical fuel pump. Pretty sure IF fuel was draining back then that would also suck some air in. Just some pre-coffee brainstorming.
