Sunday the two boys and I took the pickup out for a drive, only put on 250 miles but it was trouble free and ran great. Anyone else have to shut off their pickup when ordering in the drive thru? No big deal, just a little worried how it would start back up and was fine.

I did not look at the fan hub before I left, also was not towing anything so did not worry about the temps.

It bugs me that the fan hub may not be working so I dinked with it tonight. I pulled the hub off and removed the fan.

I mounted the fan hub in a vise and spun it around to get the fluid to were it should be, spun fairly easy after twirling it over several times. Wrapped a string around it and pulled it steady with a digital fish scale.

1.17 lbs pull was the highest it read.

Next I put a heat gun to it and used a digital temp gun to read the temps. Wrapped the string around it and did the pull test again.

I checked it at 200, 220, 230, and 240. 240 is when the hub pulled the hardest. 4.10 lbs. i did not try at any hotter temp, as I would think around the 230 temp it would pull the hardest.

After the tests I shortened the spring. Forgot to take pics but I cut another notch to clip the end of the spring in and JB weld it in place, turned it clockwise.

Did the same process. Once again forgot to take pics. This time at 220 deg temp the hub pulled to 5.5 lbs.

Put everything back together and now I will probably have to wait until spring to see if it actually helps. I don't see our temps being above 40-50 degrees again until then.

Well this happened. I am getting towed back from my nephew, 23 miles after leaving to town with the wife for date night. Just over 500 + miles of driving and no problems until then.

I was driving along and when I stepped into it to pass the fuel psi light and warning came on. After slowing it went back out. thinking my fuel filter might be plugging I set my dash to read the fuel psi and was only seeing about 3 psi, ok but normally runs around 4.5 psi at highway speeds. about another mile down the road and it happens again this time the truck died. 0 fuel psi.... and dam-it would you know it I took all of my tools out earlier that day to work on some other junk of mine.

I cracked the drain on the primary fuel filter and nothing but air spewing out. Front tank showing 3/4 tank?? switched to the back tank and gage did not move and no fuel flow.

so after I got towed back changed fuel filters and the dam thing started right up after bleeding the fuel system. (date night cut short). The next morning was going to go for a test drive and same thing happened a mile down the road. Tow back to my shop.

What I found is the fuel tank selector valve must have shorted out and was only drawing from the rear tank but still giving me a reading of 3/4 tank, reading the front tank??? when the valves fail to they revert to one tank or the other?? transfered fuel from the front tank to the rear about 8 gallons, made it to town and topped the rear tank off with another 9 gallons. sooo now I will have to replace the fuel selector valve or upgrade to a bigger rear tank like I should have from the begining.

Now the wife has been razing me about running out of fuel, since I have done this several times on a custom bike I used to have with no fuel gauge....and it always seems to happen on date night!! ‍♂️♂️

I have made several trips to town, 70 mile round trips just off the rear tank. I have not changed the selector valve yet. One thing I did notice running on the back tank and when heavy footed the low fuel psi warning comes on. I don’t think the Holley red can supply enough fuel. When I had it just on the front tank, never came on but my fuel psi would drop to about 1 psi. The weather has been unusually warmer here and the engine temp usually runs about 180-185. I would like to see it run a little warmer when breaking it in. I put cardboard in front of the radiator. The temps did get above 200. Since I adjusted my clutch fan spring I can now Hear the fan come on around 215 deg. So hopefully when I do pull something and in the summer time I will not have any heating issues.

Today me and the boy did a mentored deer hunt about 100 miles west. He got his deer and the pickup and engine hran flawless there and back.

So far I only have about 600 mile on the fresh engine. Don’t drive it a whole lot due to the amount of salt they put on the roads in SD. After sitting for about two months I went to start it. The glow plug relay just cycled quickly. Tested the glow plugs and found on the pass side 2 and 4 not working.

When I got 1 pulled I found the tip burnt off. So then I pulled the one under the turbo and that one was burnt off as well.
I know running to advanced can cause GPS to burn up. Will a dripping nozzle cause this as well?? When I tore down the first engine I had to GPS with tipis burnt off as well. They are Beru GPs so I know it is not the brand at fault

Yes it sure can. I had my timing way too far advanced for quite a while and didn't burn off any glow plug tips. I probably just got lucky there. Before I bought my current IP and injectors from Mel, I could tell which injector was leaking because it kept burning off that glow plug tip.
