Hello everybody I’m having some trouble. Set in the other night and decided to do the injection pump, (she runs like a top now.) Now I’m having a problem of when the truck is warm it will not fire back up easily, but it will finally cough some black smoke and roar to life. Does anyone know of anything that I could check or look at? I already tried the room temp water on IP to ensure it was not it and that does not seem to be the case. Any advice would be really nice.

Also, when it’s hot I also notice a touch of starter whine when the engine finally takes off. It also seems to me like if you shut it down and start it back immediately it has a drag getting going then, I was thinking the starter but it’s “fairly” new which after a season of winter starts with no glow plugs, I’m not sure how new it is anymore.

It does sound like there is a drag from the starter. What is "fairly new"?If your batteries got low from cranking and cranking that could have damaged your starter if it's the old Mitsubishi style starter. You did say there is black smoke which would indicate a clogged/dirty air filter or over fueling.

I meant to add the black smoke could be from the timing being too advanced.

Where did your new pump come from and how did you set the timing?

What does your tachometer show when cranking? If it not >500 rpms go get a new starter.

I ended up having to set the timing by ear, I have slightly retarded and advanced the timing with no change. The pump is a R&D pump

My starter has a lifetime warranty so I believe I will try that first, if not I’ll just have to play with the timing

I advanced it a touch and it did not change anything, maybe retard it a little? I will also add that I have very minimal black smoke pulling.

I’ll tinker with timing after I do starter if the starter don’t fix it. I’d like to have one of them timin lights but I ain’t got the time to wait on it to be delivered, everyday the truck is down is money out of pocket, besides everyone round here just times em by ear and goes on. From bull dozers to Semi’s just the way everyone grew up. Besides with this virus all the shops are backed up, but I’m going to try the starter if that’s what the consensus is

If the timing is what is causing the black smoke (most likely is) then you have to retard the timing.Advancing it will only make it even worse.
