Happy turkey day y’all. I’ve spent it installing a new flowkooler water pump. I have an 86 F250 6.9 and she has always ran well. New pump is installed and there is no leakage anywhere. I flushed the system but when I start the truck up it gets to 200 degrees which I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it that hot. Also I’m not getting any hot air in the vents. I put new radiator hoses upper and lower, and a new heater hose. Can’t for the life of me figure out why this is happening! Any ideas?

Sounds like air needs to be purged. Did you run it with the heat full blast and the cap off till the thermostat opened? Haven't done it in a while, but I think that would do it. Somebody else will chime in. Where in in Jersey?

Just so you know, 200* on these trucks is not overheating. If there's an air pocket by your temp sender, the steam inside there is hotter than the liquid around it. It can take a lot of run time before the thermostat opens when it's cooler/cold outside.

I’m stationed over in Atlantic City @quickster It’s been an interesting three years to say the least lol I did run the truck with the radiator cap off once I put in about 4 gallons of coolant and the radiator was full. After about 5-10 minutes the coolant just started to flow over the cap :/ This air pocket sounds like a real possibility, I’ll give it a go and see if I can burp the big baby

You're way down there. I'm about 1/2 hour away from NYC. Knock on wood, this will be my last winter in this welfare state.

@IDIBRONCO Would you say 200 degrees is pretty standard driving around not towing? I have a stock temp gauge and an aftermarket one with numbers. It read 200 but the stock one read near the cool end of normal.

If you strongly suspect an air pocket, pull the hose off the heater core that goes to the block and fill it there.

I got about 4gal in the radiator before it was full and I knew that wasn't right. Put at least another gallon or two in the heater hose so I know it made a difference. Mine was just pushing out the radiator like yours before I did that.

Thermostat isnt even supposed to open until 195 degrees

@chillman88 that reply was exactly what I needed! Thanks partner, I’m going to do exactly that in the morning. I knew 4 gallons wasn’t right either, considering the manual says something like 24 quarts for capacity. If I could buy you all a beer I would

Now take into consideration, there could already be water in there too. I had removed the drain plugs from the block. The engine will still hold a few gallons if you only drained the radiator. That had slipped my mind for a moment!

It depends. My mechanical reads right at 190*. I've been told , in the past, that the specs for a given product (batteries, thermostats, etc.) are usually +/- 10%. If that's true, then our 195* thermostats that start to open at 195*, could start to open 19* higher or lower. I believe that Cubey says that his RV runs at about 185-190* unless there's big hills or a lot of wind. Keeping this in mind, I'd say that 200* may be standard for your truck. You won't know until all of the air is out of your cooling system and it's full of coolant.

I pulled the block drain plug as well, and flushed the whole system. Made sure to make a big mess in the process too haha. About to head over to the shop and give this all a try. I’ll post back with the results!

I couldn't swear to it, but I seem to recall that when you're burping the air out of the system it helps to park the truck nose high.

So I jacked up the front end and bought this over priced funnel to help burp some of the air. It didn’t seem to want to burp.. if I squeezed the upper rad hose then yeah I got some air out of it. Truck went to 200 degrees too. I just installed a new motorcraft thermostat about 6 months ago and it never gave me any problems before now... can it just take a couple runs to purge all the air? No leaks anywhere still. Upper radiator hose is not hot which makes me want to say that somehow the tstat went?
