So having seen a few other similar threads here and not wanting to clutter up their threads and confuse anyone...

I have a used 088 kit on the shelf, and I have a factory kit on Diego. I'll explain details but the gist of the question is...

What is my best option going forward for Tank?

Tank will stay 5spd. I plan on studding the heads and most likely putting Russ' cam in. It's primarily a tow rig but I'll daily it on occasion. I do NOT have immediate plans for an intercooler and I'm hoping to run a 110cc pump as that seems to be the happy medium with a NA block whereas it seems the 130 starts pushing towards unreliable, and is just begging for trouble without an intercooler.

Originally I spoke with Russ and he said the 088 might be best with the largest wheel he sells, but I also asked him compared to a stock factory turbo which kinda locks that for comparison. So let me make it more broad.

STOCK factory turbo vs 088?

Fully upgraded factory vs 088?

I'm concerned with the leak prone slip joints on the 088 setup, and I could always order a modified up pipe from @IDIoit to solve that on the factory kit.

I guess I know which way I'm leaning but I wanted some input from the group, especially @typ4 and @Thewespaul given how many of these they've both worked on.

I'm NOT planning on getting a newer turbo, unless it's really cost effective compared to upgrading the existing ones, another plus for the stock turbo being upgrades should just bolt on IF I ever decide to.

Current finances dictate that whichever turbo I use will be installed as is and run with the stock IP turned up for at least a couple years.

Fwiw whichever kit I don't use on Tank will go on Diego to keep his dignity as being turbo'd lol

Not an exact comparo buuuut.
My 88 had a first ven banks non gated, my 93 has an ats 093 non ( ferd).

Both were\are towpigs the non gated banks was \ is my pick for towing.
The reason is it was slower to spool but held boost better (in my opinion) the gated 093 comes outta the hole quicker (towin who cares) I want top end hill power...
I still want an ic

wot in the end they both perform similarly, with an egt advantage going to the non wastegated kit.......but I dont drive my truck that way, and the wastegated kit just performs better the rest of the time. especially towing.

With a manual, I'd think you'd want to be gated for sure. An auto can get by without a gate because the engine is loaded while shifting, whereas a manual isn't.

So my vote for tank w/ 5 speed would be the factory turbo, with upgraded up pipe. And diego w/ an auto would get the 088.

Just my 2 cents.

I had an 088 up until about 3 months ago. I drove the truck for about a year with the c6, that 088 seemed to pair really well. I think it’s because rpms are usually higher when getting up to speed on an automatic. As soon as I switched to a zf5 I noticed a difference in the turbo. It being non gated really messed with my low end. It would get pretty Smokey and egt’s would get pretty warm.

I still think for a mostly towing the 088. You might lose some spool between shifts but it should recover quickly.

Also my cam will make it pull like a train, or so im told.LOL

You think that even compared to a factory turbo with a big wheel?

It sure would be great to NOT have to pull the turbo off Diego lol

Yeah this was a consideration but I think the way I typically drive while towing it wouldn't be a huge deal. Of course.... I'm used to towing NA so I'm always high RPM anyway foot on the floor trying to hold speed lol

This was my train of thought that could justify the 088. I always shift ahead of hills and everything anyway as a matter of habit.

I don't really care if it takes another few seconds getting up to speed, as long as I don't have to pull grades in 2nd!

Yeah I wouldn't hesitate to agree if I was driving around empty all the time. I'm just kinda wondering if the "gains" pulling under load might offset the low RPM issues. I definitely considered a smoke puff eliminator too.

Well there's LOTS I would love to do, but money IS a large restriction sadly LOL

I would love to build a twin turbo large pump idi for my car, I doubt I'll ever have the funds for that particular pipe dream thought!

I would say that it depends on what your future plans (and hopes and dreams) are. If you're going to keep it relatively stock, with maybe a bigger wheel, etc., Then I'd go with the 088. If you're wanting to upgrade to a bigger turbo, then I'd say to go with the factory Turbo/093 set up. I may be completely wrong here, but I think that there's more drop options for the 093 set up. That's why I'm extremely happy that there's a 093 under the hood of my Ex Wife. It will be better for future turbo upgrades.
