Just came back in from timing it again. Had my advance on the timing light set at 8 and I was dead on at 1400. I picked up one of those British pulse converters for timing. Still smells like some fuel to me. I gunned it coming from my friends shop ad let out a cloud of white blue smoke. I timed it in my garage and it does smell like fuel. That timing is correct ,or close? Yeah I have a c6 behind the motor.

The IP guys say that the 6.9 and 7.3 are timed the same. The 8* is a good starting point, but it should be at 2000 RPM. Each IP is different so some may like 8*, some may like 9*, while others may like 6.5*. That's why I said it's a good starting point.

Hey Bronco. 7,8 and 9, there isn't too much difference. It was sitting at 8 so I left it there.

So I took the truck on the highway today. Ran it at 2800-3000 rpm for 45 minutes. Before I got there I noticed it wasn't smoking on the hills. Stopped at a few lights, nothing. All the way home nothing. So I;m thinking maybe the italian tuneup did the trick. I was happy as hell. Like I had a normal truck. Went out an hour later and it smoked till I got up to speed. ***. All I want is it to not smoke around town. When I'm driving and I see smoke in the mirror I hear The Sanford and son theme song in my head. Sucks. Sorry for the rant.

My truck usually doesn't smoke very much. It does smoke a lot in one particular instance: after I first start it up and drive about a mile or so on level ground with low rpms at ,30mph and no load, I get to a small hill and the speed limit goes to 45. When I accelerate up the hill, it puts out a ton of smoke, then stops and that's it for smoking. I only use about 1 qt in 3500 miles. I chock it up to a valve seal or two on the back cylinder that let oil drain on the uphill stretch. I'm not worried about it. You might have something like that going on with intermittent smoke.

Also, I noticed that the smoke is more evident when the sun is behind me rather than in front. I don't think the position of solar bodies affect the smoke, just how the smoke is lit up and visible.
If your truck smokes a lot until it is warmed up, maybe it is some bad glow plugs?

Right now I'm at 8 degree. It's starting to get better. I'm taking her out regularly to the interstate to hammer the cobwebs out. Also I pulled the injectors to have tested. I found one bad leaker. Got them all popped and cleaned up. Found out the likely reason for the clogging. My back tank just started leaking, so I pulled the bed and found that it was full of rust. Pulled the filter and it looked like mud coming out. So I put in a new tank and filter, and it seems to be smoking less. Still seems like it loads up once in a while, and when I take off I get a good puff. But definitely not as bad.

I forgot about doing the atf. Going to have to drop some in when I fill up. Possibly pulling a trailer out to PA this weekend so I'll have a good 2-3 hrs each way to blow it out.

If it was me I would run a fuel filter of HotShots Diesel Extreme through it and let it sit with that in the pump and injectors overnight. Run it hard the next day and it should take care of a decent amount of smoke if it’s fuel related

I've been using that as an additive. Didn't know if it was good to use straight up like that.

I use it whenever I have a smoke issue, and it always takes care of it for me. The Extreme is designed to be used as an occasional deep cleaner, and then the Everyday Treatment is for regular, every tank fill up. I use both, and am very happy with how it works.

That being said, I hope that you get it figured out easily!! I’ve gone through 3 engines in my truck figuring this stuff out, and it’s no fun when you have mystery problems. Good luck man!

Thanks. I think I have the everyday stuff. Will look for the extreme. This motor runs awesome. It drives me crazy when something like this happens. I need it to be correct or I won't be happy till it's fixed. I've never had a truck that smoked; even a little.
