I don’t think he timing will do it. It is currently at 9 deg. I did a quick test drive with timing at 8, 8.5, and 10. 9 seemed to be the best. It’s just after driving the previous engine with the R&D cam, the is defiantly a difference.

actually fit on the 75 cab like it belonged, just had to tweak the lines a little. The brake pedal is a little high, which I may address later.

Going to give the engine a first test pulling in the next couple days. Only going to pull my 20 foot boat total weight around 5000. Not much of a load but figured it would be on a fresh rebuild.

Well with about 150 miles on the fresh overhaul, I thought it would be a good idea to put a load on it to help break in the new engine. I hooked my boat up and was going to take it to the lake for one last time before storage. Temp on Friday 11/6 was 74* so why not take the day off of work and get one last time on the lake. Well I did not make it far.

I was thinking the boat weighed around 5,000 lbs but after checking I am right around 3,000 lbs with trailer, full tank of gas, and all my equipment. No problem pulling.....Wrong.

Normal driving seams like I have pretty good power. Temps are as follow with nothing behind it.

204 water temp, seams a little high for not pulling but I did have a 30 mph head wind and I was into the pedal pretty hard before I took this pick. Oil PSI 42, 2.4 lbs boost, 580 was my EGT cruising at a steady 60 mph.

Where's the rest of the story? What happened for you to have problems pulling the boat? I also thought that the 204 water temp was a little bit high, but you have a fresh engine that's not broken in yet. I have seen one for sure that ran high on water temp until broken in.

engine temp was up to 230 degrees (that is where I had my audible alarm set). EGT was at 880. This was going with the wind down a slight grade. So I turned the pig around and headed home after pulling it only 6 miles.

On way home I pushed it a bit more and coolant temp would hit 238, EGT just under 1000. That was me just trying to keep it at 65mph. The powers there, just not the cooling.

New 3 core aluminum radiator from Northern. 50/50 mix. 95% sure I installed a Motorcraft T-Stat. New viscous fan drive.

The one thing I did not notice is a roaring fan when it got hot, new fan drive junk??? If I put it in neutral and coast it will cool it down real fast. But I can get the temp to climb really fast as well

If the fan is working correctly, you should think it’s going to suck the grille through the radiator.... at ~240, it should have been fully locked. It’s possible the new clutch is not working properly.

All them temps in my truck are aboit normal above 7k towing pulling my camp trailer I will ride 235 a full grade and around 975 on the pyro itll hang there but its managable also a new motor needs at least 10k miles I don't care what people say around 10k miles you will see a huge difference in everything from oil consumption to fuel mileage and at 30k miles it will change again if it was mine if run the **** out of it (within reason) for a bit also a motor broken in towing is a better tow rig than a pavement princess any day just like a motor from cold climate does better in the winter

Yeah, I figured it will perform better once broken in as all engines do, especially diesels. Disappointed how fast it will heat up. When I get a chance this weekend I will test the fan drive and see if it actually working.

This thread has helped me a bunch. Love the build. Could it be Just some air in the cooling system that needs worked out . Maybe a thermostat. Sounds like the fan clutch is working.

I really do not think it would be an air bubble, as i used a vacuum fill tool and have never had an issue using one of those. Thermostat i am 95% positive I used a motor craft one and did test it before installing.

I am going to test the engine fan first. If it is good I am going to drive it as much as I can until it is broken in. We had a good 6” of snow and temps are in upper 30s this week. As soon as roads are dry I’ll start driving it to work. Not to fond of driving it on salty slushy roads quite yet
