I would want to put the cam in if it was mine. I think that it would make a difference, at least when there isn't much boost in the lower RPMs. I would also check the valve clearances before you put the cam in, throw the engine back together, and run it. If you don't want to or don't have time to check the valve clearances, don't run the cam. It can greatly shorten your engine life when valves and pistons touch. You DON'T want to be doing this again in a few thousand miles.

Upon reflection, I have decided that my desire to retain reliability exceeds my desire for a few more torques.

No Cam.

Thats what I thought. I did not feel like having to deal with valve clearances and springs. I felt like it would just open up a new can of worms.

So if you go no cam, what will activate the valves??

LOL LOL LOL
I said something similar to a guy who was unpleasant (to be forum friendly) several years ago. It was winter time, we were working nights. We'd all go outside five or so minutes early to start our vehicles. For some reason, the carb that was on my 1984 Mustang sounded like it had a big cam in the engine for a minute or so. As I was walking back inside after starting my car, I passed this guy. When he came back inside, he asked me "do you have a cam in that car?" I told him "well yes. It's running isn't it?"

Thanks. After that, he said "you know what I mean". I laughed and said that I did. Then I told him that it was a stock cam and that it was only the carb. I knew what he meant because that's what we used to say when I was younger. "Having a cam" in your engine meant a big cam.

On a whim, I purchased new exhaust valves. Those came in last week.
Over the weekend I did a quick pattern on the new valves on the old seats.
Huzzah! The seats are fine, the valves were just beat.
The new valves pattern beautifully on the old seats.
I'll just give them a quick lapping to match them up and I'll assemble the heads.

Yay!

Sorry for the lack of updates. Cerakoting and engine sure does take alot of time.....

Cylinders have been deglazed.
Pistons, exhaust manifolds, turbo mount and exhaust union have been coated with Cerakote V-136. Once I receive the turbine housing, crossover, and downpipe they too shall get coated in V-136.
Oil cooler, oil cooler end caps, water pump, Crank and water pump pulleys, alternator bracket, Front and rear cover have all received a coating of Cerakote C-187.
Currently prepping the oil pan, intake manifold, and block to receive C-187.

Where appropriate (Matter of taste really) associated fasteners have either had Cerakote applied, or have been chemically Blackened.
Hope to have some pictures up soon.

The weather has done a number on progress. Last week Monday we had snow, by Wednesday it was in the mid 80s and we'd gotten 2.5 inches or rain very quickly. We ended up with some water in the building. The cold soaked parts and the stupid high humidity flash rusted nearly everything.

I will hand it to Fluid Film though. Anything I had a coating of FF on was perfect. I had run out of FF and used wd-40 on other parts. Screw you WD-40. Trash.

Anyway, things are cleaning up nicely. A couple pics for now. Block, intake and pistons all Cerakoted. Building is a mess from cleaning up water. I'll get more pics later.

More delays. Reassembling the heads over the weekend I noticed I have a Valve spring with no damper. Can't figure out how I missed that during disassembly and cleaning.
Must have been a Monday engine.
New Springs on the way. Sucks because I already have one head done. Ohh well.

I keep telling myself, It'll be fine, it'll be fine.
