I'd have to tag along slower, I know my slow ass and kids couldn't do 500 a day haha
Just by doing some rough research, I have a suggestion. What about making it a three day trip from Indianopolis to the Royal Gorge? From Indianopolis to Boonville, MO it's about 380 miles. From there to Wa Keeney, KS, it's about 400 miles. Then to the Royal Gorge, it's about 350 miles. Also from quick research, there's three campgrounds in Boonville, MO. There's a KOA in Wakeeney. I could join up there since it's south and 20 or so miles west from me. If that's too far, then it would have to be a four day trip from Indianopolis to the Royal Gorge. That's starting to sound like too long of a trip, but I don't know what anyone else is thinking.

Are you really thinking about this trip Danielle? It's a long drive. The Eastern slope of Colorado is roughly 2/3rds of the way across the country for you. We all know that a Class C is about as fast as a constipated pig, and won't pass a gas pump without stopping to visit. You'll be bringing the two girls, and have no relief driver. That's a very ambitious plan, and just a bit crazy. It's something I might do.

If you think the girls can handle the trip, and you think the camper is up to it, and you can afford the time, I think it's a wonderful idea. It would be quite educational for the girls. There is lots to see along the way, nice things to make the trip even slower. Plan the trip well in advance. Each of the girls could keep a diary of the trip, take lots of pictures. The trip home could be much faster with two drivers.

Man! I hope she doesn't take long enough for one of them to get a driver's license!:joker:

Damn!! You almost made me spit my coffee all over the keyboard. :rotflmao She mentioned her less adventuresome half flying out at the end of the tour. Admittedly, he does have a job to hold down, so the entire trip might be a bit much for him.

This is good info. I just threw out the 500 number to try and get some ideas of range and time.

What's a more realistic range per day?

3 days could work. That is a good suggestion.

Or are we going too far west?

If we try to even out the mileage say from New York city and San Francisco it puts us in either Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska or South Dakota.

And I've go no issues with any of those places I just haven't the first clue about where might be a good place to visit.

So if that's too far please say so.

Remember I'm that guy who can drive from Bear Lake Idaho to Atlanta Ga in one sitting so I really need help coming up with realistic daily mileage numbers.

From what I remember, there's a sign outside Kinsley, KS that claims that it's half way between New York and San Francisco. Just in case anyone was wondering.

Or are we going too far west?
My opinion is "absolutely not!" While I live in the Plains and can always find something interesting to see here, not many others that I've met feel the same way. As a friend of mine once said, "it takes a certain type of person to live here" meaning in our very rural area where there's generally one stop light in each county and that's at the intersection of two highways in the county seat. I've loved going to the mountains for longer than I can remember, but I went to the Colorado/Manitou Srpings area so often as a kid, I really have no desire to go back to those areas and do the tourist thing. Pike's Peak is fine, it's going up to the top of a mountain. I can stand to see the Royal Gorge again, especially with new friends. I usually prefer to go farther west than the Front Range since it's less crowded. There's a lot more obvious things to see in Colorado than there is in the Plains so I think that would be a better choice. Also, since this will be around/right after July 4th, as we go higher into the mountains, it will also be cooler. There won't be as much need to run the A/C at night. The daytime temps are also much easier to tolerate. There's also a lot that I haven't got to see yet in Colorado and I always enjoy going to new places and seeing new things. Also, as I mentioned earlier, there's off roading to be done for the more adventurous. There's also many places to rent an ATV or SxS if anyone feels like doing that. I will be bringing along at least one off road toy myself.
So if that's too far please say so.

My opinion on this one is that while the journey is part of the adventure, I think that the end destination is by far the bigger part. The longer it takes to get there, the longer the overall trip will be or else the time at the final destination will be much shorter. I'm also thinking about trying to beg and plead my step brother and his wife to come along on this trip. He would be there in a heartbeat, but she is not the outdoor type at all. The longer that we could spend in Colorado seeing the sights, the more likely she would be to agree to the trip.

Here's another thought. If it's really going to take a lot longer for Danielle to make the drive, maybe she could leave a day or two early and then the rest of us could play catch up? That way, she could go less miles each day and still make the trip.

I'd be alone with the girls in the IDI, no class C. And my truck is also slow as it is NA with 4.10s haha... Although I'm digging into the lifters and..... So I can do highway speeds just not 500 miles a day haha

At best my better half could fly in and meet me at the final destination but not accompany for the road trip part.

I could have sworn that you said you have a class C unit, that it helped you get Steve out into the wilds of nature when he could have some of the creature comforts. You plan, then, to take the IDI, to stay in a tent with the girls? That will be a greater adventure for them, more to write about in their diaries. The truck can cruise all day and all night at 65mph, 2200rpm, assuming good mechanical condition. That's about the legal limit in most places. I was able to do that, pulling a loaded trailer both ways, on my last run into Canada. You'll even, eventually, get used to the question, "Mommy, are we almost there yet?"

"You Go, Girl", to quote a phrase. I have faith that you can do this.

Yes we do have a class C, it's a gasser V10 and slower than my TDI Passat when my turbo broke haha. The camper was indeed purchased for my husband to be encouraged to come camping with us as it has air conditioning and TV.

He has the kind of job and is at the level at his job where he has a million vacation days available, but it's never a good time to take them. I don't understand it, but as he is the main bread winner of our household, I trust he knows what he's doing haha.

I grew up tent camping as our only means of affording any kind of vacation and in my 20s and early 30s it also was my own only affordable means of vacation haha.

So I'll be comfortable throwing my metric ton of camping supplies in the truck and heading out with my kids and my unattractive and useless dog.

I think as far as far, going about 65mph for a 4 to 4.5 hour stretch then maybe take an hour lunch then another 4 hours would be about it for the kids and myself.

All sounds good. I think you have this under control. My prediction is four days on the road, each direction.

You make me almost wish I were going. The only way I can see that happening, though, would be if the meet coincided with a road trip to Maine. That road trip would happen only is I couldn't fly for some reason, or I had to take something too large for the plane.

If you do the math here, going 65MPH for 8 hours, you come up with 520 miles. I thought that you couldn't do 500 miles in one day?;Poke
