Ok so i just advanced my ip 2-3 hell maybe 4 dimes width to see if it would help with throttle response at mid range rpm.
It seemed to help a little but only time will tell.
It definitely has more clatter when cold and when given throttle on the road you can hear more diesel sound if that makes since.
What are the side effects if i have it to advanced? Im not trying to hurt the engine.

From what I know, if timing is way to advanced, it can damage the top end of the engine (valves, pushrods, valve springs and such)

Is your rig making noticeable more exhaust smoke now?

It is hard to time an idi by ear with any accuracy, due to different fuel qualities and the fact each engine has its own unique quirks. If you run a fuel lubricant or cetane booster, it can drastically reduce the clatter of the engine, and therefore timing by ear is very hit and miss due to the fact that tanks of diesel often vary in quality. The best way to know if it is too advanced is to get it timed with timing equipment. But if you don’t have access to timing equipment then the best way I’ve found to time it is to find a good hard grade to climb, and then just adjust the timing until you get the most power and least egts. This can be a bit of a tedious task, but it’s worth it to get the timing correct. Good luck! I hope you get it figured out!
