Intercooling and CDR

So after a lot of searching through old threads and not really finding the info I was looking for I figured I would come here for some advice.

My truck is coating the top of my engine from the hot side of my inter cooler piping and I figure it’s from the CDR. Very oily around the boot from the turbo, and seems to be hazing the top of my engine.

I know with a regular factory turbo the oil vapours from the cdr would be burned up however it seems to be condensing after the turbo in the intercooler. Does this leave potential for my piping to fill with oil eventually?

I have found a few examples online for creating a road draft tube but I can’t find an example of one from a factory turbo engine. Does anyone have a guide or parts list I can use to buy one? Is it possible to simply pull the guts out of my CDR and run the tube off it to the bottom of the truck? Seems that would be easiest?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's crankcase gases and not your turbo seals?

How can I 100% rule out the turbo? Run the truck N/A for a bit and see if oil collects? Or would I have to take the turbo off to inspect? I suspect the cdr because the turbo was rebuilt a few years ago, if the oil continues in the intake after I switch to road draft tube then it’s for sure the turbo.

I will keep the CDR if it works, however it’s 130$ part here in Canada and I would rather delete it if it’s past it’s life.

As for a catch can, I would just put it in between the CDR and intake correct?

you don't want a road draft tube. fix the boost leaks and no more oil will leak out.

I get enough oil in my intercooler that I have to drain it periodically...….never any oily intercooler tubing boots.

Honestly don’t know why I didn’t put the two things together. Didn’t even occur to me it’s likely a boost leak if there’s oil too. How do you drain your intercooler? Just pull some piping off at a low point or take the cooler off and dump it? Can’t imagine there’s that much oil. I guess I’ll bite the bullet and spend the 130$ on the CDR

Yes catch can between cdr and intake pipe to turbo.

Does it collect more on one side than the other? I drilled and tapped a 1/8"NPT drain valve in to my "hot" side but I've never even gotten a drop from that valve. It's been on there for at least 5k, probably 10k miles.

I tapped mine on the "cold" side. If I have been towing often, there will be little to no oil collected in there.....but if the truck is just being used lightly, I have drained over a quart in an oil change.

This engine has lots of blowby and oil consumption. just short of 400k and used as a 1 ton truck should be
