Hey guys, I picked up another 87 F350, crew cab, 2wd with a 6.9l and a T19 behind it. Motor is shot (I will be rebuilding it at some point). My question: I have a good 87 E350 van engine with a C6 behind it. Can I just drop the good van engine in the F350 and install the bellhousing, clutch and tranny after changing out the, I think, drivers side exhaust manifold with the truck one and the necessary fuel filter tower components? In other words, are the blocks the same regardless of whether there is a C6 or a T19 behind them? Hope that is clear, thanks for your help.

The blocks are the same. Bell housings change with the tranny.

Ok, so the manual trans/bellhousing will bolt right on to the van engine without changing the cast iron piece that holds the starter from the truck block to the van block, those "adapter plates" go either way, manual or auto?

And, please forgive my bad manners, DaveBen, for not thanking you immediately for such a quick reply, my mother, God rest her soul, would have slapped me silly for such a social faux pas!

I believe you will also have to switch the oil cooler/filter bolt-ons. As I recall one leans forward while the other leans more aft.

This swap has been done often enough that I'm sure there must be a write-up around here somewhere.

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."

And, you, Gandalf, have arrived precisely when I needed you!

I forgot about the oil cooler, good catch. My main worry was whether or not the T-19 bellhousing and trans (both in great shape, still in the truck) will bolt right up to the van engine despite its being a factory C6. I looked for info on the subject but it seems most are swapping for a Z5F or an E4OD. Maybe a better question would be are the bolt patterns the same on a diesel C6 case and a T-19 transmission bell housing! I'm probably overthinking it.

The IDI blocks are the same no matter the application. Pickup, Van or IH Medium Duty. They are all drilled the same (except on the "Factory Turbo Block, there are 1/4 oil passage plugs (I.E. Where the turbo oil feed is) rather than 1/8 inch). The "bolt-ons" are what changes by application. The oil cooler headers (the bundle is the same), engine mounts, exhaust manifolds, the truck and van use the same transmission adapter, the IH Medium Duty adapter is different. Fuel filter mount is on the passenger side of the pickup application, drivers side on the van and IH. Power steering pump is different between the van and truck, but the van one will fit in a pickup, but the pickup one won't fit in a van (or at least not fit and be serviceable). The front accessories are the same between the pickup and van, as long as it's the same belt configuration (V-Belt vs Serpentine). Basically, if it bolted to the outside of the block, it could be removed and bolted directly back on any other IDI block.... you could even take an engine out of an IH Medium Duty application, pull all the bolts on's off., and move everything from a pickup or van engine and bolt it back on.

So a C-6/T-19/E4OD/ZF-5 will bolt up to any Ford Pickup/Van Transmission adapter.......

One other difference is the IP in a Pickup/van application has a higher governor speed than an IH or U-Haul IP. The Pickup/van is ~36-3800 RPM and the IH/U-Haul is ~26-2800 RPM)

Snicklas, Gold Mine! While I have been wrenching on these for quite awhile, the older I get, the more I forget! Thank you so much for your detailed posts, I'll be getting this underway shortly and I have the guys here at oilburners to thank for their great advice and info!

My memory actually worked, for once. I found a thread I copies long ago about swapping a van engine into a truck. I think it was way back about 2004, so it would be putting an IDI van engine into a truck. The thread is too long to paste in here or I'd do that. I have it copied as a Word document. I'd be happy to send it in an email if you think it might help. I haven't read it all, but: 1) I have it, and 2) I'm not doing a swap. If you'd like a copy just PM me your email address and I'll have it on it's way.

Note to self: file title=Van engine into truck.doc. Thats so I don't have to hunt for it again.
