I need to move a 1996 F250 4WD extended cab short bed. I am guessing it weighs about 5800 pounds. The tow vehicle is my dually, so I should have weight on my side from a control and stopping standpoint. I would really like to use a tow dolly, but I have some concerns about the track width as well as the overall weight.

One other question: I am pretty sure that with the transfer case in neutral I should be ok with regards to the transmission and towing, but if need be I can always leave the truck running in neutral as it does run.

I'm only going 30 miles, just trying to get some input from somebody who might have towed something similar a short distance before to see what they utilized.

Thanks in advance.

YES put the transfer case in neutral. I have towed Jeeps all over the Western States with it in neutral and it works great! That is way they have added the neutral to the transfer case.

If you are renting a uhaul dolly, they'll say it is too big of vehicle.
I put a 81 f150 on one, so track width should be fine. This may not be recommended either, but I would put it on backwards, to get the weight of the diesel off the dolly.

I would agree about going backward but I'm not sure how that TTB would behave or affect the front tires. Support for the geometry of the front end will be out and based on how I've seen my two TTBs behave just backing out of the driveway I'd be concerned about 30 miles. I'd be tempted to give it a shot but have a backup plan and don't rely on the column lock to keep the wheels straight, tie the steering wheel off to the mirrors brackets or seats or both but something strong at least.

I ended up using a really nice tilt equipment trailer. My dually PSD pulled it really well, I'm guessing the trailer was about 2000 lbs and the F250 Ext Cab was about 5000 lbs. Truck never left overdrive at 65 mph with just the trailer on the way there, even over Tiger Mountain which is 6% for about 5 miles. Coming home with the F250 loaded I turned the OD switch off and maintained just under 55 mph.

The way I usually tow it's the other way around! Lol. My extended cab 250 pulling a trailer with a 4door dually idi on the trailer! That dually didn't break a sweat or even try hard pulling that 250.

I definitely knew it was back there on the 6% grade part of the drive, but it did really well on the flatter parts. I ***** about 4.10s because they turn all the RPMs unloaded, but they definitely earn their keep with some payload in tow.

Nice job. I used a similar trailer with my 00 Tundra pulling my SCLB parts truck back from WI. THAT was way too much for my truck. Couldn't do over 50.
