I’ve got an 87 6.9 idi and when I turn the key off it keeps running for a while the other day it ran for longer than it ever has with the key off so I disconnected the power to the pump and it finally shut off after about 15 sec any ideas on what may be cussing this?

is the exhaust blue or black when it keeps going?

Either there is a short or the something else is causing the red wire with green stripe to stay energized, or you're consuming oil or something similar. These mechanical engines are VERY simple, if the engine is spinning and has fuel and air she'll keep on running - no electricity necessary.

We'll need more info to go off of. After seeing you saying it runs 15+ after pulling the wire, I'm going to guess it's either eating it's own oil or something goofy is going on.

After I drive my truck and turn the key off it continues to run. Normally just for 10-15 sec then shuts off. But a few times it’s ran way longer after I turn the key off. The other day it kept running after I turned it off for over a min so I popped the hood and disconnected the power to the injection pump and it ran for another 15 sec or so then finally shut off. What could be causing this? Is it a bad pump or is it about to run away?

I'm not too sure then.

My wild ass guess, and it could be wrong, is that the injectors are leaking, not popping properly.

Does it take a few cranks or so to start back up again after? If so it could be running on the residual fuel in the injectors/lines. I'm sure someone else will have a better idea.

Either the ignition switch is bad, there is an interrupt between the switch and pump, or something on the pump/solenoid is bad.

Nice thing is it's a pretty straightforward setup.

Also, one time when I first got my truck I didn't realize that the water temp didn't work properly and that the fan clutch was bad. Drove it 45 min in city traffic in the 90s. Cooked all the carbon off and wouldn't shut off haha

It will fire right back up no problem and I don’t think I’m consuming oil
If you were consuming oil you'd know it by exhaust visually and the smell. Should be hazy at minimum, if not belching.

Something is acting as a fuel, if you are unplugging the fss and it keeps running for a little while. It's either diesel, oil from blowby or poor ring sealing(, or a lot of an additive through the intake but you didn't say you were running crap loads of propane/methanol or anything). If the exhaust looks normal (and smells normal) meaning virtually transparent, it's diesel entering the engine when you don't want it to be.

I just run diesel. No propane or anything like that. It doesn’t sound harsh or anything just continues to run. So if fuel is continuing to get in would it be the injectors or the pump?
