Possibly another tread category for us could be stories of road trips in our idi's? Good place to discuss fuel mileage, towing, or even places to vacation.
I'll start with our July 4th drive from central PA to northern Maine (Allagash). Nearly 1800 miles round-trip, we averaged 17.1 mpg with AC running the entire trip. Only truck related issue, we lost one of the rear center caps on the rough roads. Maine has beautiful scenery! Pics are on road towards Allagash.

It would be cool if you go on a road trip post a screenshot of your route in this thread and you can grab lunch and meet other members along the way if it fits in your itinerary.

Nice truck and pics. The last one on the dirt road is a great shot.

Wow! This ricocheted into an area I never anticipated nor care to participate.... I hoped we could share on the road experiences while driving our idi's. I've also experienced some of the negatives associated with our current situation however see no benefit dwelling in the negatives nor attempt to impose my opinion on others. Let's discuss old diesels and how we use them fellas!

Well, mine is sat with a blown fuse but once its fixed, should be rolling around everywhere until the house is fixed and empty then it is off to the east coast. I'll be sure to document along the way with lots of pics. Baby and wife will be in the back with the dog up front!

Anyways, road trips.. this is a cool idea. I’ve never made any long trips, I consider long to be more than 500 miles. I’ve made a crap ton of small trips, I’m hoping that I can make a pretty good one after I graduate. I’d love to go up the California coast and into Washington, and then down through some of the southern states. Not sure how I’ll tie that together.

State highway 101 up the coast then swing past Rainier. Scoot over towards Lewiston and down. Could hook 80 or maybe do route 66 if you're itching for south.

I took my IDI east to the NC coast last year then went south to Key West and back again. 2800 miles round trip. Only averaged 15.5 mpg because the fan clutch was freezing up and locking completely randomly. Otherwise good trip.
Headed out in a couple weeks to northern Minnesota to canoe the boundary waters. That trip should be around 2500 miles round trip, but we are taking the 1984 benz wagon, a 5 cylinder turbocharged IDI.

OK. Back to the original topic!!!!! Do not ************ back to this thread for anything but reading about a road trip.

Only warning. Next will be a weeks vacation.
Im trying to convince the wife to let me find her an Excursion instead of a newer Explorer for hauling the kids around. Sny downsides to your 6.0? It do ok long distance?

We love the Excursion. It was great when the kids were younger (we have 5, but all but 1 are over 18 now) and having a travel trailer. Had a 21 Coachmen TT. Mine is all stock, except an EGR Delete, and get on the interstate, set the cruise at the speed limit, crank the A/C and enjoy the camping trip. I towed the same TT with a 2000 5.9 V-8 Durango. Even with the weight distribution hitch and sway control, even a camping trip in-state or just over the state line (I live near Indianapolis) so Cincinatti, or to my parents house just over the line in Illinois was exhausting. You were always "driving" anticipation hills, drift toward the center line, that way when a semi passes it doesn't blow off onto the shoulder. The TT was where I stored it when I bought the Excursion. I toed it home the 5ish miles "dead ball" (had the WD/SC hitch head, but didn't do anything but hook it to the ball so I could set everything up at home for the hitch)and plugged in the lights/brake controller. The Excursion pull it better dead ball, than the Durango fully hitched up.

No real issues. I've done the EGR Delete, and now at 175000ish miles and pushing 20 years it needs an injector. It still fires up and I can drive it, but I won't do much more than move it from the driveway to mow, just in case I just haven't had time to swap the injector out. That being said, everything on the engine is factory except, Alternator, had toe have the FICM repaired because of voltage issues from the alternator), water pump, batteries, and belt. The turbo, head gaskets and head bolts are the ones they put in it over on Brookville Road (the IH Plant that made the IDI's 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4's is about 15 miles from me in Indy). Maintenance, and no tuner is what has gotten me here. Good oil every 5000 miles, only Motorcraft/IH/Racor fuel and oil filters. They have plenty of power in stock form, in my opinion.

It doesn't get driven as much anymore, we have the two newer trucks. It's not leaving, I plan on keeping it (had it almost 13 years now) and still use it. One of my oldests friends jokes, when he seei it out, that the hot rod is actually out of the garage. Once I replace the injector, I would have no issued driving to any destination. Lots of room for passengers, with the bucket, bench, bench setup I have, you can seat belt 7 in there. You can fit up to 9 depending on the size of the person.... there's just not enough seat belts. Great road trip vehicle. Even with all 3 seats in the truck, you have the equivalent of cargo room to what's in a 5.5ft bed pickup, even more room if you fold up, or remove the 3rd seat. Plus on a road trip once I saw right at 20 mpg for the trip average. That was just the truck, a few passengers, and some luggage. That is in the same ballpark as the 2 V-6 F-150's get.

Thanks for the info! I'll report to the wife and keep whisoering in her ear. Maybe she will get confused and say Excursion instead of Explorer and I can ignore it and have the 6.0 I've always wanted. There is a blacked out Excursion that pulls into the parking lot every day and all I can hear is the turbo. Thats usually around the time I log on here to see whats new. I want a big family and will be doing lots of trips around the NE so really would like to ride in style and comfort as only known to the early 2000s.
