The one I got from the ford dealer is, I'm assuming, the short one. It matched what I pulled out of the water pump. I have never pulled this thermostat since I've owned the truck so I can't know what's been changed but that thermostat has been on there a while. So hopefully a new motor craft thermostat will fix the issue. I will post when I know for sure.

Ok, I discovered a leak at the water outlet. I changed it to a new outlet and put pressure on it all night. It was at 15psi at 9pm and at 7am it was down to 5psi. Still seems pretty good to me as I couldn't find a leak. So I drove it about an hour and he gauge got to about halfway but never exceeded that. Is that normal? I've taken for granted the temp gauge on this truck for so long I can't remember what's normal.

Ok drove he truck all week four hours away. Now I go to drive home and it starts to overheat. I am also like 3 gal low ok coolant! I'm seeing now white smoke in the exhaust so can't figure where the coolant is going. Any ideas!?!?

Head gasket would be my guess. To much coolant to lose on an oil cooler, and you would see some milkshake in your oil or an external leak.

Do a leak down test and/or pressurize your cooling system and see where the pressure goes, but I’d get ready to pull the heads.

Well I out a pressure tester on it overnight last week and it was at 15psi and then 5 psi that next morning. I figured that could possibly be leaks in the tester or something. I figured a bad head gasket would leak all the way down after that long. And I'm not blowing a lot of smoke from the tailpipe either which would be indicative of a bad head gasket right!?

head gasket on a 7.3 PSD is extremely rare, even when modded well above stock.

could be a head gasket failure that only shows itself under boost...like driving home for 4 hours straight on the highway. You could try driving it like grandpa around town and see if it looses coolant.

Ugh. I hate this. I have an 2016 ford fusion eco boost with 105k miles that needs a new engine because of a cracked block so I'm an soooo tired of losing coolant on fords. Thankfully I trust it will be fixable on my obs. My fusion needs a whole new engine!

would it help to use a block tester with that liquid to heck for combustion gases?

Ok with this new overheating and coolant loss I drove about 180-200 miles today and lost 3gal of coolant.
Now, as I'm adding coolant to my truck that was running for about 1.5 hours and it sat off for about 30 minutes. The top hose is not so hot I can't touch it. It it's hot. He bottoms hose is stone cold. So.... it has a brand new motor craft thermostat in it. Someone please explain this mystery

That sounds like a radiator flow issue. The thermostat has to be opening at lease some to let the hot coolant into the top hose. Working normally would be hot top hose, warm bottom hose...... is the top tank of the radiator hot?

Weird thing is it didn't over heat at all. But the needle does go dead and then rebound to the O in normal sometimes. Maybe a faulty sensing unit? I haven't been popping the hood each time I stop to see if the degas is blowing off but maybe that's where my coolant is going. Seems odd to me but my other vehicle is busted so this is my primary vehicle so I need it fixed something fierce

7.3 PSDs have a degas circuit, which means it shouldn't need to be purged of air.
Not on a 94. Possibly part way through 95.

What do you mean? Is it blowing out the degas bottle?
Has it ever had any coolant come out the exhaust? I'm wandering if your injector cups could be leaking.

When it was overheating the cap would pop and coolant would relieve out the degas cap.
