I also wonder if part of it is the design of the 4 speed automatic transmissions......

I've driven gas and diesel 4 autos,

My Excursion is a 5 Speed (5r110)

My 2 F-150 are V-6 Gas 6 Speed Autos.

There is a huge difference in the way the 4 speed act vs, the 5 and 6 Speed

These have all been in factory trim, but the way the 4 speeds are, I understand why everyone wants to do a ZF-5 Swap. They are a "slush box". I know of a couple people that have put a tuner on a 7.3 PSD just to adjust the way the transmission works. Any 4 speed that I've had that has the O/D Lockout doesn't like and probably shouldn't tow in O/D (my opinion) (I've also gotten hooked on the Precision Transmission channel on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYAAY7V9ifGS7Q8S35EFVnw and he does a good job of explaining how and why the transmissions he is tearing apart fail. He even has a few E4OD/4r100 videos on there)

I even recently test drove an F-150 with the 5.4 V-8 and 4 speed. It was the same "slush box" feeling as the 30 year old E4's feel. Was not impressed. With the power and gearing, I'm quite sure my 3.7 V-6 would have left that 5.4 sitting......

The 5 speed behind the 6.0/6.4 were light years ahead of the E4/4r transmission. They shift when they should, you can tow in all 5 gears, and the Tow/Haul mode really works. It completely changes the shift schedule and will also engine brake very effectively.

The 6 speeds are even more refined. Have Tow/Haul that really works. Has a very effective RPM range for the engine and gearing. Cruising at 55ish, it runs at 12-1300 rpm.... just puts along, but also works well towing. Plus with the way they control the newer transmissions, it really helps with the economy.

I would like to drive a truck with the new 10 speed transmission...... that would be an interesting comparison to the others....

If adjusting your FIPL doesn't get you where you want and your TCC isn't locking up before OD then you could try adding a manual lock up circuit for it. Then at least you are direct coupled minimizing inefficiencies. Just a switch and an led indicator that manually applies power to the TCC when you want it to instead of when the computer decides. Guys with the E-4OD have been doing that for years until chip programmers figured out how to make it behave better with their programs. Or find a banks trans command or Baumann/US Shift controller for it.

My second E4OD was a used one that came out of a blown up 97 PSD that happens to be built, Anyhow I go into OD at 35 just cruising no trailer with a firm lock up. Now ******* the gas or towing my mowing trailer It tends to let the RPM's ride up higher until around 45 to then drop down and lock up. I guess that's how it was built but I like how it shifts, still would prefer a ZF5 though.

Ive always had the exact oposite problem. When trans is at temp locks up converter at 35mph. to me felt to early and luged. learned how to work pedal better to make it better. I tried the FIPL in at many different volatages and that didnt change when it would lock converter. I always wanted a tuneable aftermarket controller like the quick4 so that i could have multiple tables and perameters and make it work like a new truck

Maybe I have thought about, or presented this wrong.

I am not saying that I want it to lock up at 35.

I am saying I want it to shift at 35.

It is winding way out. Like it is staying in second until 40. Then shifting all the way up to 4th, and locking up, both at the same time at 40.

It is the "winding way out", between 30 and 40, that concerns me. Anywhere near 35 and above, it just sounds way too wound out.

Tach isn't alarming, but it's higher than at highway speeds. And at 35 I expect the tach to be the same as at highway speeds, or less!

I almost feel like it is skipping third entirely.

I'll try to find a place where I can test it out better. Need some smooth back roads to really know for sure.

Well it depends on the speed limit. I had am E4OD/3.55 truck and it would get up there... The C-6/4:10 didn’t like the interstate.....

But my trucks now.... lets just say, the Ford programmed cut out works..... LOL

Have you ever adjustes your FIPL? Or know what its voltage is at idle? Id try playing with that

OK, Finally was on a long country road with little to no traffic.

So I could test by coming to a complete stop, then get up to speed again, various ways.

Very little go pedal. Moderate go pedal, over-average, etc...

Lots of go pedal, means way high shift points for everything.

But the "pattern" seems consistent, no matter what. (Just higher shift points when yer really giving it the go pedal.)

~~~
Anything resembling normal go pedal... Casual slow startup, to what you would expect, getting into traffic in the middle of town...
There is a shift point at roughly 10 to 12MPH.
Then there is a stretch from there, to ~35, in which there COULD be a shiftpoint about halfway, but I really can't be sure. It almost feels like it, but man, if there is, it is so soft as to be almost completely indistinguishable.
The shift at roughly 32 to 35 is noticeable. Just as is the shift at 10-12 mph.
And then, every time, right at 40, OD kicks in.
~~~

Just before it shifts at 32 - 35, the RPMs go up a bit.

AT that shift point it levels off for an instant, then the RPMs go up rapidly.

By the time you reach 39, the RPMs are at least 1500, to 1800. (Sometimes over 2000.)

~~~
At 40, OD kicks in, and with less effort on the go pedal, you can maintain speed at 42 to 45, with RPM at around 1100.
That has GOT to be the sweet spot for fuel mileage.
Unfortunately, in town speeds out here, (In the towns you have to go through, on the highway. to get to the big town...) Are generally at 35MPH. And going 42, will get you a ticket.
~~~

Now...

I don't want to put in a manual button.

I don't want to have to always remember to turn on OD, or to turn it off.

A manual button would be a recipe for disaster in my truck, I think.

I'd really like to leave it all automatic as it is.

Especially as consistent as everything is.

I would JUST like to adjust that OD kick in point, down to 34-35, instead of up at 40.

I really wish there were a way to do that.

And I have already explained in this thread, and in others, that adjusting the FIPL hasn't made any difference in that particular shift point.

I'm thinking that there has to be something in particular that controls that...

4th gear at 35 will bog down the engine making the truck a real dog to drive. You could get away with it, but the converter should not be locked.

If you really want to change the shift points, you need to go to the aftermarket for a controller.

@Selahdoor man I love reading this thread , I have the complete opposite problem , try using the OD button, that’s how I do it cuz my eye sore shifts early , otherwise aftermarket controller will fix that issue no sweat, but be careful what you wish for , if your empty you’ll be fine , loaded you’ll be sorry
