So....hooked up the goose neck trailer(no horse or extra water tank) to my 88F250 7.3 IDI and went to the weight scales at truck stop. This was my print out Steer axle 3720 lb.

Trailer axle 5320 lb

Drive axle 5100 lb

Gross weight 14140 lb

Keep in mind the horse is at about 1100 lb and whatever 80 gals of water is will be added. My question is.... is this too much for the old girl... I know the hills are gonna be slow, but we don't have too many of them where I go. The seller I got the truck from said should be no problem but I am now finding out he was a dolt!!!!!If I have to I will get a smaller trailer cause I like this truck a lot!!!!
Give me some feedback on your thoughts.
thanks in advance

I think that your rig should be just fine with that with that amount of weight after you get the proper gauges. I’ve been towing 6 days a week with my gross weight varying from 10,000- 21,500 pounds.

I think you'll be fine. You may find you want a turbo before too long, but I've hauled that much with my 91 down 15 up and down the hills from NY to Lancaster. Use your head and you'll be fine.

Make sure you have good trailer brakes. There's plenty of upgrades if you find yourself unhappy with the truck.

I have never been to a pay for weigh station, so pardon my inexperience. I have only been to the ones at the dump. There they weigh you all in (Truck and trailer together.) not by axle. So is this a estimate of GVW doing it axle by axle? Seems too heavy if the trailer was unloaded and for only 1-4 horses.

Your truck likely weighs in around 6,000 pounds. So do you know if your trailer really is supposed to be 8,000lbs empty?

Agree you should be able to pull 10,000lbs without issue. Watch your tongue weight, if the truck is sagging in the rear or doing a wheelie in front when the trailer is on the truck I would think about air bags in the rear.

As mentioned above good trailer brakes and a good brake controller are a must. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy 3 brake controller if the truck does not have one.

If you have no history on the truck maintenance I would change all the fluids.

You may want to add or upgrade your secondary tranny cooler. (First one is in the bottom of the radiator.). You will likely be pushing your transmission hard up hills and creating some heat.
