Hey all. My truck has been having creeping high temps for the last week or so. Now it full on overheated on me. When it was still hot and turned off I spun the fav clutch and it's easy as pie to turn. It doesn't free spin it will stop when I stop spinning it but it definitely isn't "locked". How do I tell what's wrong with the truck.

ps it has coolant

I have no idea. Truck has 375k. I have a new fan clutch to change as when it was overheating I never heard the fan at all. And then right after I turned it off the fan was still easy to turn? Should it be eAsy to turn when it is clearly overheating ?

I drive it about 20 min without a trailer and it was halfway between the l in normal and the h of hot. It reached this temp after driving about 10-15 minutes at 55mph. Got home and the degas was steaming and empty. But it never "overheated" was just running warm.
Also, when I killed the engine I ran up front to see how long it took the fan to stop and it took 3-5 seconds of free spinning to stop. That doesn't seem like it's engaging to me.

On the note of fan clutches, what is the latest for decent quality fan clutches? Im sure many trucks out there have bad clutches.

Yeah, this is your cooling system and you want it to work ALWAYS. Don't go cheap on this.

The Murray clutch from my local parts city is made in the USA. That was good enough for me and I have two of them working fine in different trucks right now.

I just replaced my fan clutch. It took all of 10 minutes. But now I'm starting to wonder something. If I was not ever over the H on the gauge or even touching it would that be hot enough to boil the coolant out of my degas? I haven't tested the truck yet as I don't have a fan wrench to tighten the new clutch ( I got the old one off with an air chisel) so I am afraid to start it without tightening.

If you didn't ****** up the water pump mating surface when you took the old one off then there isn't much to worry about. The engine rotation will keep driving the water pump into the fan clutch. I usually just spin it down until just before it touches and then give it one last hard spin to give it a running stop up against the water pump. If you want, bump it once or twice with your air chisel that will be more than enough. You still need to be able to get it off when it's time to change the water pump. When I was at oreilly's the other day they had the fan clutch wrench on their rent a tool list, you could try there too if they aren't too far for you.

I didn't change the water pump yet. But good to know the engine rotation should tighten it up. Thanks.

Ok fan clutch did not fix it. When I drive with no trailer it will fluctuate from middle of gauge to just under hot. And when I stop it is steaming out of the degas bottle. And when I loose. The cap it will steam and then I hear a pop or something and the I hear water moving around inside the radiator and degas bottle.
It was full and I drove it 30mi and I took over a gallon or coolant. I need help.
New fan clutch new cap on degas bottle.
