We were getting groceries in Listowel and I saw it in the back of a newer dodge crewcab and asked the guy , where did he find it? he does equipment maintenance on a custom work farm equipment operation and one of their customers had it in a barn for a couple years when it broke a track drive wheel. he said he only paid $100 for it. I jokingly called him a rotten ******* and he said he had no problem passing it on........................ wife thinks i'm nuts but my kids are excited even if its not done until next winter. my 10 yr old son wants to work on it with his grampa so its now in grampa's shop. I didn't even know what year it was until we unloaded it today, I didn't care! my dad is all excited too, we lost his 77 elan twin in a barn and shop fire back in 2013 , funny how a $100 purchase can bring so much joy to so many :cheers: I had been watching for an old snowcruiser but the company went out of business in 1975 I think and Zero parts are available, elan parts even interchange with other model skidoos and aftermarket stuff is even available..

I've owned a dozen sleds, shortracks and mountain machines, and I've got to agree with you: the old simple machines really do offer the best "smiles per dollar". The Olympic really started it all off, but I believe the Elan really is probably the best cleated track/bogie wheel machine you could get your hands on. I think they built those machines well into the 90s, so there's got to be a pile of parts out there to support them. Such a cool simple piece, with durability that nothing else can match.

Get some pics up as you tear into it, or better yet: start a dedicated thread for us snow machine junkies!

Officially joined the powerstroke team! Never wrenched on one of these, long time idi owner. Just now purchased 2003 F-350 crewcab dually 4x4 7.3 powerstroke 6spd as a project. This truck unfortunately experienced an extensive under hood electrical meltdown destroying virtually everything under hood. Also bought a parts truck with an unmodified 7.3 powerstroke with only 128,000 miles. Parts truck also has 6 spd. This truck has been destroyed by rust. Salvaging best parts from each should produce a decent finished product. I'm certain I'll have questions and I'm guessing you guys will be as helpful as the IDI crowd.

Some of us are the same crowd. :D
Good to know! First point of concern on this project is dealing with airbags. I've never had to remove them and understand they can be dangerous. I'm planning to remove both dashboards and reinstall the 2000 dash into the 2003 dually. At this point I'm simply collecting information trying to learn / understand the job before diviing in.

In hook the batteries for a little while before messing with the air bags and they are pretty stable explosives but I still get a little nervous playing with then

I sold it to a good home, young guys 3 yr old daughter jumped in the back seat and said "mine" . my kids were a little upset I sold it but it basically sat in the driveway all winter and moved 3 times. was actually blowing snow on top of it and still running my VW to work. now I need to get my wife's 96 back on the road again > fridays job is fuel pump and steerign box. got insurance back on it today and plate sticker tommorrow. we had a great rip with Brutus , but really didn't need him after the trip. we never go anywhere very far as a family of 5 and the supercab is big enough for short trips.

this was one of its last trips back in Jan I think. the wife wouldn't drive it after I put the flatbed on, made it about a foot longer. got $3000 Canadian. as is. with all steel wheels and good tires. included a lot of spare and new parts. will be a good work truck for him but not worthy of a resto. had lots of messages from people many hours away but this guy was only 40 min. met him about 20 min at a Tim hortons, he heard it run and made an offer. I guess he had looked at a bunch even from the west and this one was proven so.........

I have all the parts stored away to build a 97 F250 crewcab shortbed including southern cab and bed , have to pick up the chassis now and get it blasted/painted. start form there. up to 5 yrs to finish it. that will be my next holidays...............

tried to sort the running issue, idle but only at 500rpm and almost stall when put into gear. will rev to 3000 if you give it time , no smoke, no codes. fires right up and then engien light goes on and idel drops and rough.

Have you pulled the codes? The Engine Light tells you that there should be codes to pull.

pulled 2 codes: P0603> batteries were unhooked . ran it and pulled the icp plug while running to check that , made no difference> made it pop a P1280. cleared those codes, nothing else comes up eventhough the engine lite pops on as soon as it starts up................it will idle for hours at 500rpm.

You ran it with the batteries unhooked? That's when those codes were thrown? Maybe an alternator issue. With several bad diodes in the rectifier, and no batteries to load the system the voltage spike can get quite high and cause interference with IDM and PCM functions. I found that out a year or so ago when I had a weird idle after I put new injectors in. I was looking at the IDM voltage and current on a scope and it was really out of wack. Put the scope on the alternator and found I had weak rectifier bridge and my batteries were about shot. Rebuilt the alternator and I got a smooth idle back and the IDM current looked normal. I had also noticed extended crank times leading up to my troubles but just assumed that it might be due for batteries. Maybe new batteries would have masked the alternator issue further until if failed but I found it interesting how much the new alternator improved things.
