Hi everyone.
I bought this truck last summer and I've been lurking here ever since to learn as much as I can.

I've changed the oil/oil filter, and the fuel filter/ water separator is next.

The chilton manual i have says not to fill the new filter before installing it, but several videos i've found all say that i should.
The manual also says that the filter is a one piece, but the other picture i attached says otherwise.

Any/all suggestions are welcome.

The stock filter is two pieces, get the one piece filter and save yourself some headaches.

Definitely fill the filter first!

Thanks chllman88!

I already bought the filter yesterday. The only one-piece they had in stock only had a water drain (no sensor port), so I ended up getting a filter that fits the 2-piece.

and speaking of the sensor port on the bowl, does that plug just pull straight off, or is there some other finagling required?

I believe it just pulls straight off. Mine never has been connected.

I've never had a water in fuel sensor or filter heater and never had an issue. To each his own.

You should be fine with the two piece, but as they age the drain can leak and allow air into the filter. Most of us just prefer the one piece because it's one less thing to worry about.

Is that substance a kind of thick grainy substance? If so I believe you've got some algae growing in your fuel. Not unusual but you should give the tanks a dose of algaecide. When you do, you might want to keep a spare fuel filter in the truck for a few weeks and keep an eye on the filter light on the dash.

For future reference the drain on the factory lower bowl can be rebuilt/sealed using the kit below. That kit is an international part that is available elsewhere as well but I remembered seeing it on diesel-o-rings and I can't remember the ford/international part #, maybe someone else here does.

I concur. Definitely run some algaecide for a few tanks.

yes, it looked like fine-grained rust particles. it seems crazy that something can "grow" in diesel fuel. definitely looking into the algaecide.
also thanks for the link. that place isn't all that far from me.

And i just went on a ~10 mile drive...no leaks, so i'll it a success.

....the algae actually grows in the moisture or water in the fuel, not the fuel itself....so if there's algae, that's an indication that you've got water in your fuel....
