Loaned my truck out to family for the past few months. Went to pick it up and was told it wasn't starting. Well they were right. Just white smoke. Little touch of brake clean (yea I know I know it was diagnostic) and she lit up but a bunch of white smoke. Sat idling till warm. Heard an occasional knock or miss.
Now it's hot it restarts easily. But it sounds like this which it never has done before.

It's about an hr away from home where I can take my time to work on it. Worth the risk of driving it? Oil pressure is 20 at idle and approaches 50 as you Rev it.

That's a tough call via utoob vid...
All I get is a miss\stutter or ks it a knock?

How about doing 20 questions with the driver present when this happened?
Like what was going on, hot ,cold, redline, idling.
Was it eating garbage fuel?
Who tried to tune it?
Who tried to fix it?

All I was told was stopped starting. Although that may be a glow plug issue.
I think it's a fuel knock but not certain.

Drove about 20 minutes and it stopped. Drove it back and it came back but quieter. Gonna park it, then fill the filter with standyne next weekend.

I don't blame them for the truck having issues, but man it infuriates me that they didn't bother to tell me until the day before I needed it.

Effed up for sure...
No excuse for borrowing something and not making contact immediately after an issue!

Just a wild guess here based on not much. Ask them who put gasoline in the truck and see what they say. That does happen with people who use them and don't know anything about what type of engine it has in it. Do I think it had gas ran through it? Probably not, but it 's hard to tell from a video. It does have a noise that sounds like a knock.

The driver has been using it on and off for a few months and used to be an army mechanic. I doubt he put gas in and they would of told me if they did.

If I stomp on it I get black-gray smoke now at the top of 2nd when I floor it which I've never gotton. Always a little bit of white.

Really thinking of getting injectors redone. Don't know if I can afford a pump rebuild tho.

Just a thought: why don't you tell your relative that he's gotta have it towed to your home (AAA is your friend) or at the very least follow you home in case you have an issue? In my neighborhood, when I borrow my friend/relative's tools, I gotta bring em back as nice or nicer than when I picked them up. If I lose them, I have to replace them. Not saying they should replace your truck, but they should at least get it back to your place to diagnose.

Honestly that sounds pretty good. If they were better off I might do that. But the VA screwed up their paperwork and are withholding retirement payments so they arnt the best off atm.

It's my finances parents and we lived there for awhile and did alot of car borrowing as needed both ways. But they blew the trans up in one of their cars over a year ago right before we moved out so I've just left a vehicle or two over there for them until they got it fixed. But it's been over a year and my generosity has ran out after this.

Sorry for the rant. Can't really rant to fiance about it too much since it's her parents (though she is in agreement on it with me)

To me thats a diesel knock dose it with atf and give her hell and have them follow you with a tow rope just in case
Yea thats sounding like next weekend more and more....

Didn't do it this week as a diesel mechanic said it was dangerous to drive with a fuel knock, but he works on modern stuff where say an injector hanging open and melting a piston I think is more likely. And there not THAT much smoke coming from her so......

Dude. Yours sounds exactly like mine.

If you are still there, fill the filter with ATF, run it long enough to get the injectors filled with the atf. Then let it sit till next weekend, and drive it home.

These trucks aren't cinderellas, like the new ones are.

Never, NEVER, buy anything from a mechanic.

I guarantee you that engine is 100x worse than it looks, and he used his remedial mechanical skills to get it running to the point where you think it might be worth it.

I have three rules about buying used cars. 1.) I never buy a car that broke down on the test drive. 2.) I never buy from a seller that I catch in a lie. 3.) and, I never, under any circumstances, buy from self-proclaimed mechanic or former mechanic. If they are such great mechanics, they have the ability to fix it up and sell it for a reasonable price. Instead, they 99% of the time fix up the wreck just good enough to sell it to a person who will have to deal with the real problem.

I didn't buy it from him. It's my vehicle that I was letting family in law drive. I actually don't trust him to work on anything, I just brought up army mechanic to point out its unlikely he put gas in this diesel truck.

I let mine sit around a lot. Drive it for a dump run about every 2 weeks. I then will get it out with the trailer for a hauling trip. It always runs smoother and more power after I run it ******* the hauling trip. I think it just needs to be run and needs some new fuel in it.
