I would like to install an intercooler for my 86 F250. I have a line on a low miles one off of a 1999 7.3 super duty and it comes with all the piping and everything. I know that it’s damn near impossible to fit one in this body style truck but I know some people have had good luck. I will be keeping my air conditioning functional. No way I’m giving that up. So I’m wondering if I would be able to move the radiator back an inch and massage the core support to fit the intercooler. Has anybody else done this?

I don't know about the core support massage yet, but I'm planning to move my radiator back some when I actually get around to installing on on my Bull Nose. Since I hit a deer with one front corner a few years back, I'm going to have some straightening to do as well.

Yes, you can move the radiator back. Heath @hesutton did that on his bullnose.

However, I don't think he modified the radiator to move it back, he modified the mounts/core support, since at the time it was his camper hauler (he now has nice Aluminum 6.7 for camper duty). He wanted to maintain the factory format on the mounts, that way half way across the country if the radiator went, he could goto any parts store and order an "IDI Radiator" and drop in to get back home. If you modify the radiator, you are now stuck with a custom only part, and you blow a tank off the radiator hitting an armadillo in the desert, you now have to remake that custom part on the side of the road.....

Thank you for the info:Thumbs Up I dig the idea it doing it about as clean and “factory” as I could. I won’t be modifying the radiator, rather the mounting like you mentioned above.

I need to get out there with a tape measure and see how much I could move it back. The only thing I’d can see as an issue is the A/C lines but I’m sure I can just move them back. I haven’t really looked at the mounting of all of it.

Check out how Erwin did his. Maybe he's got some more pics that would be helpful for you.

It was not the previous owner, it was the current owner, me. If you want some pictures how I did it, I will post those. I had to cut the radiator core and move the bottom an inch, modify the radiator mounts but all fitted well, even the latch support is modified and there, no need to cut the grille, tight fit but it is doable. Yes the ac is there also and working flawlessly. The engine is stock, no studs. I believe it was never opened, it was c6, I have put the zf5 in it, single mass flywheel, LUK clutch, hydroboost, 3.55 gearing. I have sourced nice captain chairs with middle console, the correct tan colour corresponding to the xlt package. And I have put old era radio with cassette from a brick nose. Collecting parts, new weather striping on the way, new steering gearbox, new ip and injectors on the way. Saving for better turbo, the banks will go to my humvee project eventually.

Some pics

Scott is correct. I moved the radiator back (1.5 inches) by modifying the rad support, not the radiator for the reasons he mentioned in his post. Cut and moved the lower support pins back. Cut some 1.5in rectangular tube and drilled bolt holes with longer bolts for the upper radiator mount. Had many more pics, but those were lost when Webshots folded.

The '99 IC is 1.5 inches thick if IIRC and that's why I chose that distance to move the rad. I was able to just flip the condenser mounts around and they bolted right up. The lines weren't an issue at all buddy.

A possible additional concern is replacing auxiliaries. Just did the power steering pump on my 85 and pulling the pulley and installing was already tight. Not sure id thats a concern for you just one thats occurred to me.
