So I ordered a large bypass cooler for Diego, but found out the radiator I'm putting in actually DOES have the internal cooler, so I'm trying to decide what to do.

I can run through the radiator with a stock external cooler as well, or I could run through the radiator and use the large bypass cooler. It's a Hayden 699. It's about 11x12x3/4".

How much cooling do these things really NEED. I'm not planning on doing much towing with this truck, that's what the dually is for. That said, I would use it any time the dually was down as a backup.

I don't want to "waste" the cooler, as I have another project I need one for. But if it's worth it, I'll use it. Just don't want to throw away money unnecessarily.

I think runnning from tranny output to radiator input then radiator output to tranny input will keep tranny fluid at operating temp & not being too cool.
Have this setup on my '86 C6.

I like my transmission, I like it working just the way it does now. I don't want to have to replace it, ever. I understand also that heat kills an E4OD. Heat is it's enemy. I have a Long TrueCool Max LPD4739 mounted in front of the radiator on my dually. I also have an EGT gauge which I watch.

It's my understanding that the E4OD routes the coolant through the bottom portion of the radiator in order to warm it up initially to it's proper operation temp. Then it helps keep the transmission cool. The routing I have for the cooler, if memory serves me correctly, is transmission to radiator to cooler to transmission. My transmission does not run hot.

The 6.0 trans cooler for the 5R110 is the biggest and most effective cooler I've ever seen for the e4od. The price and availability is usually second to none as well. It mounts in between the condenser and radiator using existing holes and brackets for the radiator so it takes up less space as well. If you go junk yarding to find one, get the trans lines from a 4R100 too and the fittings on the side of the trans. They are 3/8 diameter and there is a built in bypass between the two ports to always ensure fluid is going to the important parts in case there's something wrong with the cooling/filter loop. The fluid also moves a bit slower giving more dwell time in the cooling circuit. When I put mine in I routed it through the radiator then the external and back. Some think bypassing the rad is fine but the trans oil needs to get up to temp as well and some have reported issues with shifting when it's really cold out and the trans won't warm up enough. If you're a member on the diesel stop go ask mark kovalsky (former ford trans engineer and Moderator for the idi group over there) what his thoughts are. He's always been very help and frank about what to do to make the e4od last.

I converted mine to 3/8 lines and added a hays external cooler (ditched the original external cooler) and routed through the internal cooler in the radiator. Also deleted the heater hose that ran from the heater core back to the radiator. I don't have a temp gauge but the lines do not get extremely hot to the touch.

I ended up eliminating my radiator cooler entirely due to my situation, which was truck was running hot but ect was malfunctioning. Truck was running hot, heating up my trans fluid which was already hot. I used a condenser from a VW I think, as well as an external spin on filter.

But then my body rotted off haha

Really, I'm biting my tongue to keep from commenting on this. You've got to remember where you are, who you're dealing with here. Some of us have to climb a ways to reach the gutter.

Glad I wasn't the only one LOL

Thanks for the input guys!

This truck had a 6.0 cooler at one point, but the P.O. transferred it to his new truck. I don't really need one that big anyway, as I said, I won't be doing much towing with this one anyway.

I'll put the bypass cooler in front of the AC condenser and plumb it in after the radiator cooler.

Well I was concerned, the cooler has 11/32 hose with it, and I know these lines are 5/16.

I got lucky. Smeared the hose and barb with petroleum jelly and with a decent amount of force the new 5/16 rubber hose made it on far enough to clamp down.

I was going to build a couple bars to mount it to, but the way it fits I'm just going to use the included zip ties to attach it to the AC condenser.

It's pretty big, should keep the ol girl nice n cool.

It's snowing here today, so I'll wait for it to warm up. I'm going to have to tip the radiator back to get the zip ties in anyway.
