Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to install my carrier with a lock right locker in my Dana 60 for some time now. I can’t find shims to fit in between the bearing races and the machined face of the axle housing. The races I’ve ordered are way too small and I have zero clue where to put them. Are these shims made to be installed between the bearings and carrier face?

Do I need some sort of test bearing??

I even ordered a ring gear spacer that unfortunately was too tight to make the carrier fit.

Please feel free to give advice or parts I need. Thank you!

Did you research this at all beforehand?
You have to have the rwace installed before you can shim it.

Yes I’ve been trying to do this for 6 months now. ):
I installed the carrier with the races. The picture is after I tried. The problem is that the shims are much too small of diameter to fit between the races and the machined housing. I’ve watched as many videos as I can find, mainly they are on Jeep XJs. I can’t find shims large enough in diameter to fit.

Reason the races aren’t in the picture is to show the small diameter of shim to the large diameter of axle machined face.

All of the Dana 60s I've ever set up had the shims installed under the bearings, between the bearing and carrier. I made a pair of setup bearings out of a set of used ones by using a flap wheel to hone out the center of the bearing race so they can be easily slid on and off by hand without using a puller or press. Once you have the correct gear pattern and backlash, remove the setup bearings and press on the new ones.

Thank you so much, when I took it to a shop months ago they said they’ve never seen one installed like that. So I was sent back with an empty axle. This helps so much, I appreciate it. Now to press out these bearings.

“DiD YoU ReSERch ThIS aT AlL BeFOREhanD?” Wasn’t exactly helping.

Re-reading your original post...are you installing a different pinion/ring gear or carrier? If all you did was remove the spider gears and install a lunchbox locker into your original carrier with the original pinion and ring gear you shouldn't have to go through setting up the gears again.

Unfortunately it is a different carrier than the original. Definitely wish I had the original one.

is the carrier the correct one for your gear ratio? Why the ring gear spacer?
Was the pinion left alone?
Shims go between bearing and carrier. If you don't have the right tools to pull the bearings without damaging them, building some set up bearings would be a big help.

I ended up honing two crap bearings out and then measured before setting up the Timken bearings! Locker is in and everything seems to be going fine. Now swapping in the 4407 transfercase to replace that 1356! THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP YOU GUYS!!!!
