I use the Walmart Maxx Everstart batteries which I believe are made by either Exide or Delphi now. Admittedly I don't drive my truck every day but it gets down to the teens sometimes where I live and my truck starts every time without being plugged in without issue.

It's a mixed bag on what company made any given battery in any given store. Around Dec 2018, they were switching to Exide made 65N, but as of Nov 2018 (the mfg date on my batteries) JC was making them. JC ones had caps sticking, while Exide were flat on top. Maybe it was a temporary extra supply they ordered to meet high demand beyond what JC could do. I saw several WMs in NW Texas that were totally out of 65N batteries around that time.

I think they went back to JC, since the pic is back to showing the raise caps:

The price has gone up about $5-6 in the past year or so too, from around $92-93 to $98.xx

The Exide version doesnt come up in normal WM searches, but found it via Google: https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-Maxx-Lead-Acid-Automotive-Battery-Group-65n/194526936

Ah. That makes sense. Good info. I'm pretty sure those are the ones I have. Work for my hunting truck.

The stickers on them say who makes them, so there's no question.

The JC label on a 65N I bought in Dec 2018:

East Penn makes Deka and some private labels. I have been a fan of them in the past, kind of the underdog in the race.

However I just recently had a Deka group 65 go open on me in the 91 ( zero volts) that was just 3 years old. Out of warranty.

I have been using Battery Systems which are made in Singapore or other offshore location. I lost my access to the fleet national account so went to Deka. Usually got 7 years out of the Battery Systems units. One trick I have used to help life is to buy the lowest CCA’s you can get by with. Here in CA high CCA’s are not needed. To get high CCA’s the plates have to be thinner and therefore more fragile. I put the 7+ year old Battery Systems batteries from the 96 in the 91 and away we went. Been sitting for almost 3 years getting shuttled around to various low use trucks and tractors. Maybe I’ll go back to them. But who knows if they are the same still.....as mentioned above one thing for sure is battery manufacturers change often!

Shouldn't be a problem with 1 battery, but I'd be concerned about making sure the driver's side terminal is adequately secured/insulated from shorting out without it being connected to a battery.

Lots of folks are out there running around with only 50% capacity in their batteries anyway, so just because you have two 850CCA batteries doesn't mean you have 1700CCA. It's probably more like just one battery if they are 4 or 5 years old. I see this all the time in my shop. Not a problem if your truck starts with the bump of a key, but if you put a new IP on and need to prime it, that's when you find out how crappy your battery is.
